I owned 2007 Ford Ranger, and it was extremely reliable (not one issue ever), however the design was terrible. I've never been in a worse 4X4 off-road, even though it was "FX4 off-road" package. Zero suspension/frame articulation, and zero traction. "Off-road" on that truck, and almost all other Fords, is just a sales gimmick.......100% BS.

Now I am in a Tacoma. In stock format, the TRD OR is excellent off road. It has true "off road" design features and tuning. It feels right at home on the stuff I do in the back country. If the reliability matches the Ford, I'm over the moon. So far, no issues for me with the Tacoma, but really too soon to tell.

I may be alone, but I really love the 3.5. I think it makes a very cool sound, and has the power I need. Almost "dieselish" in its exhaust note. I hope the mild tuning on this engine compared to its Lexus equivalent translates into longevity, but again......no one knows.

For me, if the Tacoma proves reliable, I'm really happy with my purchase. If the new Ranger is at all like my old Ranger, it's going to be a great looking truck, highly reliable, and a waste of time in the woods.

your post makes 100% sense the OP in that thread joined July11,2017 and was last seen July 12,2017 and had no other follow up posts pertaining to his original post backing up his claim, it makes you realize that there could be a lot of false claims being posted without verification that they are the truth, and anyone who may question its honesty are labeled white knights or banished without hesitation.

I've had this same thought. The engine has a very deisel-like tone. I hope the lower power tune enhances reliability. I don't really need to speed around town in the thing, I get outstanding highway performance, I just wish there was a little more get-up-and-go in the lowend torque when I'm trying to pass in city driving scenarios. The power is there, its just in the wrong place.

If you’re looking for QC perfection, you’re looking in the wrong world, humans aren’t perfect and neither are the things we make.

Loose fasteners didn’t require a trip to the stealer for me (and a number of other able body individuals) to address this issue, nor did it the require the purchasing of any items to correct it.

All auto makers have maintenance interval schedule to lube & check components and fasteners for a reason:

“A single car has about 30,000 parts, counting every part down to the smallest screws” as you can see.

And to answer your concern no, a new vehicle shouldn’t leak at the diff, but it does happen and eventually over time some fasteners are bound to become loose and leak.

That is why we have maintenance and inspection schedules.

This leak is very upsetting to you and some vocal others, I get it.

But if you have a baby over it, you’ll be very unhappy in this world with many things you buy if you expect 100% QC at 100% of the time.

The diff leak is expected to affect less than 1% of vehicles sold which is still within reasonable range of modern manufacturer(s) QC standards for a lot of things being made.

But now look at the link below for the best selling truck in America, and notice the recalls on the ’16 F-150.

    https://www.cars.com/recalls/ford-f150-2016/

Each one of those will require either a purchase or a trip to the stealer.

No need for rose color glasses to see the difference in QC and other makers right??

Other makers such as GM are worst in QC so you have the best truck money can buy, I hope you enjoy it and not let the little things get in the way to the pursuit of happiness.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I owned a brand new 2015 for 20,000 miles and actually had way more issues with it than my 3rd gen. I had to have 2 O2 sensors replaced, gas cap replaced, and had an intermittent humming noise that Toyota service never could figure out. My 3rd gen (2017) has almost at the same mileage now without a single issue. I'm sure I'm minority, but i'm very happy I traded.

Its not a matter of whether or not I can hop under my truck with a torque wrench or impact and hope that stops the bad gasket from leaking my diff fluid all over the place, its a matter of how I shouldn't have to do that on a new truck.

I'm pretty handy, I'm not afraid to re-torque fastners, but I'll be damned if I give them any excuse to avoid compensation should something catastrophically bad happen.

This piqued my curiosity for the rest of the mid-size trucks from other manufacturers and their recalls.

Let's try this. Current (or newest gen) open recalls for mid size trucks, for their first two model years of the current generation (also, if applicable, the years 2016-2017).

Nissan Frontier. Current generation 2005-Current (I believe it's 2005, if not please correct me if I'm wrong).

Look! 9 years into the generation and still has a safety recall that's detrimental to the engine/drivetrain of the car!

So, I guess they're all turds, amirite??!?! Nothing is 100% perfect. Stop acting like you're entitled to a fault-free product 100% of the time. Shit happens. Deal with it like an adult, get it fixed/replaced or if you're having a hard time and can't keep doing it, get rid of the car, one way or another.

...and for another good measure, hewhomustnotbenamed beloved Ranger (guessing at the model year, but I think this is close).

You could also imagine a non enthusiast going to Google with an issue and finding their way to TW only to end up being attacked and then obviously not wanting to return,

You're missing the point. OP said NHTSA would open up a safety recall on squeaky leafs. They would tell you to piss off for trying to claim an annoying noise is a safety issue. That's the point.

Would never tell another person what to do with their money. If it makes financial sense to hold onto the truck for a while and then dump it, then rock on.

But, holding onto the truck because it makes financial sense doesn't mean having to post negative snarky comments in 1000 different threads on TW. That's where is gets pathetic.

Yeah I know that applies to that particular Thread, I was talking in generalizations as to a possibility of why there are people that join and leave.

I did hotshot. And then I ordered mine from the factory.

Things like the 'wavy hood', 'epileptic transmission' were not present on the test vehicle. Nor can you gauge true MPG on a test drive, now can you? And to boot- I 'assumed' Toyota and the dealership would be good to work with with. My other Toyota (which was made in Japan) has had zero issues and we have 80,000 miles on it. Same with all my other Toyota vehicles.

From what I can gather, third gen issues seem to pile on with some vehicles and not on others.

So I am truly honored to be in your presence, an all knowing and omnipotent car God that seems to know all these things in advance.

Edit.. And in hindsight I would have never thought in a MILLION years that a 6.2l full size truck would get better gas mileage than a mid size Toyota with 3.5l.. That was only icing on the cake for me. Isn't that pathetic? Better mpg out of a 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque motor vs. 278/265

Who the f*ck would have thunk that?

I've almost left a few times, and I definitely am not on here as much as I used to be. My truck overall is good. It has a few problems that have all been fixed and currently it is great. My reason for considering leaving is that BOTH sides are on the extreme.

I have no personal beef with smitty99, but the amount of negativity he shows about the truck is more than "letting people know". It really does appear he cannot let anything good be said about any vehicle just because his is bad. I get it that his truck doesn't meet his expectations and I wish him the best in getting to a point where he gets what he wants.

On the flip side there are also an excessive amount of posts about "just do..." or "you are just whining"...

Or "use the search"... (on a forum while I personally can use the search and often have, leaves much to be desired)

In my opinion the reality for the truck is some are outstanding, some are lemons and most are good. I am glad to have the information about the recalls available to me and some of the off-topic/color comments I really enjoy, but it would be a much better place if both sides could tone it down some and realize that in both ways their experience is not the same experience as everyone else or even anyone else in most cases.

I kind of feel like calling a spade a spade until it gets fixed is fair. Toyota needs to get off their ass if they want the tenor of this forum to change. Otherwise, I am happy to let people knock the trucks. They deserve the criticism.

It's one of the more powerful tools, that we as consumers, have for change.

What detrimental issue has Toyota failed to issue a recall for? As in poses a safety risk, and/or a non-functioning automobile.

I'm not going to argue with you about what you are going to define as detrimental.

So an annoyance (noise/non detrimental) generated by a differential that most dealers offer to replace said diff for isn't enough?
