Will be following. Mine popped a cel for being lean so pulled it off and went back to stock.

OP updated with sound clips! (not a close reproduction to the sound in real life, but using headphones help greatly)

How long after the install did the light come on?

That's concerning. Did you pull the negative off the battery to reset the ECU after installing the intake?

The trucks ecu can compensate some for the increased air flow, but apparently not enough if it's throw a lean code. Too much air and not enough fuel.

It popped up after a couple days of light City driving. Lean on bank 1 and 2. I did pull the battery for a while when I first installed it and cleared all learning values the 2nd time.

I have had wrx and evos and done tons of intake installs first time I ever had a issue with one.

I contacted s&b about it all all they told me was to disconnect the battery over night.

Geez, that sucks. Sorry to hear that.
Did you try the overnight disconnect as they suggested?
I haven't stumbled upon anyone stating that they had the issue of running lean with the cai on the Tacoma, but I'll keep an eye out and report back if I run into the same situation

Yeah I followed their directions. I'm not sure why mine was being so sensitive to it. I should of cleaned my maf but never did. Will wait until I can get the maf scaled and try again.

I've heard that from some that CAI can give you a feeling of less low end power.

Good luck. Hope it turns out to be successful

That's very interesting, because I've noticed an improved throttle response this morning from the stopped position, as well as rolling acceleration. Could be butt dyno, but I've been paying close attention to all changes.

Sending back due to lack of response from K&N. It's throwing codes from the MAF. I also found a good bit of loose metal shavings inside the filter. booooo. It's also super loud.

Yeah, I heard that the K&N's aren't that great. Sorry that you had to run into that issue. Sucks when we spend $$ on something and it malfunctions.

This is also why I got the dry filter too, because I heard some of the oiled ones will mess with the MAF sensor

I had one on my Eclipse. Not overly ricey sounding is it? I want my truck to sound like a truck.

I was reading that too. It's funny that on k&n's website they say pretty much any MAF issue is not related to their product. They even provide test results showing it is not their filter systems. I have been running stock again for 50 miles and no codes have been thrown and I can hear myself think again. I was thinking of trying one of their drop-in filters, but I'm nervous now. Ha. At least I should get a refund. I'll get an air compressor in its place.

^ damn I just bought a K&N too. Although I think i got a different model (red filter not black). I could care less about power gains, I just need to block off the stock fender intake hole which is why I bought this one. Hope I don't throw codes..

Solid write up OP. Thanks for this. I still keep wavering back and forth on whether I want one or not.

I swapped out the exhaust and stock intake over to the TRD Catback and TRD CAI on my 17 TRD Off Road two weeks ago. For me the difference was very noticeable and because it was all TRD...all went in and installed seamlessly. I wound up with a nicer throatier than before sound on my Tacoma with much better response. I have not had time to determine any fuel differences as of yet. I considered the the CAI that you (OP) went with, but chose to go with all TRD just to keep it all Toyota for now. I will give my new setup a try for the next several months to see how I really like my final choice....for now though, I am very happy!TRD CAI.jpg TRD CatBack Exhaust.jpg FullSizeRender (8).jpg

If there's anything I've learned, it's that always take what a company says about their product with a grain of salt.
I lean on user reviews for everything I buy that's over $10 (almost). lol
I think that's the oiled one, since the black ones are dry (?). Why are you looking to block off the stock fender intake hole? just curious

You bet! I always appreciate other people's opinions and reviews when I'm on the fence about a big buy. Just thought I'd contribute my 2 cents.
Like you, I was on the fence, but after driving it for a bit upon install, I don't regret my decision. Hopefully I don't get any error codes, because that would be the only thing that would make me regret this purchase. Only time will tell, I guess
I was debating on the TRD CAI and exhaust too. They look so damn sweet! Glad it's working out for you. For me, it was a tougher decision since I was trying to cut costs as much as possible without sacrificing quality.
But your setup looks freakin' awesome, can't say I'm not jealous

I was definitely on the fence also because of the overall cost, but I am fortunate that I work at a place that allows me overtime opportunities....what you see there in the pics I posted is a shit load of overtime!:)
