Here's the deal: had the rear leaf TSB done yesterday, they put in a replacement 3-leaf, not the 4. It's straightened out, probably going back in a few days.

I grew up in California - I think that there is a law that an auto shop has to give you the replaced part back if you want it (you know, bad brake pad, etc).

Is it possible, here in Virginia, to ask to have the "wrong" leaf pack after it get's pulled out? And if so... did I just acquire a brand spanking new "Add a leaf" 3-spring pack, at 0 cost to myself?!?

It's a dealer service, you're not paying for anything, you're getting a 1 for 1 swap at dealer expense. I doubt your entitled to the old parts in that situation. Now you can go ahead and buy the 4 leaf pack if you want, then you can keep your 3 leaf pack.

Your springs didn't "go bad" you just didn't like them and Toyota wants to take care of you.

    You can always ask.
But as Luni says, its a correction to customer complaint, not everyone gets the tsb done, so its not like a normal repair like getting your water pump replaced while doing a timing belt change and you want to see the parts to make sure it was actually done. You can see 4 leafs vs 3 pretty easily.

I have read so many different stories with those getting the TSB done, having to prove it, getting wrong parts, getting it done out of warranty, not getting it done out of warranty. As far as getting parts back, who knows? You can ask.

Seeing how each dealers dealing with the fix is different, maybe yours has a different protocol. I got mine done and never looked back.

    +1

You aren't entitled to the new 3-leaf pack on your truck. You can ask, but I bet they laugh you out of the service department.

I was told by my dealer that when they warranty parts like that, they must submit them to Toyota to get paid. I doubt you'll get them back.

No you can't. This is a warranty claim and if Toyota calls the old parts back and they have nothing to send...the dealerships get debited the whole RO. Parts and labor. So, no you're not getting your springs back :) But you can ask to stare at them all you want.

BUT!!!! If Toyota is like Acura, they have a little over thirty days to ask for a part back. If they don't request them after that time period we throw the part away. So maybe you could ask them to keep you updated on the parts status.

Yeah. Warranty repairs require the parts to be submitted it Toyota. (I asked to see the forks in my transmission but that would have meant keeping them in New Orleans for a couple weeks...They said no)

Yeah, I've got no problems if they send it back. Just curious if those same rules applied. Looks like they don't.

Odd's are with something that size, Toyota doesn't actually want them back. they know they have an issue. However, that said the dealership is not very likely to give them to you either.

Didn't we all technically pay for them when we bought the truck? If this is true, then aren't we still entitled to the parts, since we technically paid for an inferiority to begin with without our knowledge but that Toyota is in fact acknowledging? Just asking...

Yes you paid for a truck with two sets of leaf springs.

A TSB is done to correct parts that aren't up to snuff, parts are replaced.

You end up with a truck with two sets of leaf springs. Why would you be entitled to the extra two sets?
