Hosta's are like crack to deer. As someone already mentioned, if they are hungry enough, they'll eat anything.

 

yeah they must be like bacon to us...to travel inside the city to get them...

 

Our cities and urban areas have more deer than the rural areas.

 

Some places are getting that way. One town not far from me has brought up hunting inside city limits due to overpopulation inside the city...They would prob be great tasting since they mostly ate grass and gardens etc...

 

That's not a bad idea. If they don't start controlling them, it can get out of hand real quick.

 

got some funny/odd/kooky neighbors...they are in their 80's and plant a garden every year, barely water the garden and still get a quite a bunch of stuff. I look at the plants and they are all half wilted and I am surprised they even survive much less produce anything. They currently have some good size pumpkins/squash of some sort that are actually decent sized even though they dont hardly water them...

 

Roots go deep looking for water, supposedly makes them more hardy. So I've been told.

 

I dunno...if you kicked the 1/2" of dirt off the top that they supposedly watered it would be bone dry, I guess they just have good soil.

 

So a few weeks ago I found a hen sitting on a stash of eggs in my woodshed. I didn't know how long she'd been there so I candled them and they were developing, so I just stuck her and them into the broody box and let her go at it. I got home last night and was checking the feed buckets for the birds, and thought I heard some peeping from under one of my hens. I poked her in the chest and out popped these two guys:


This morning I picked the hen up and set her outside of the broody box so I could do a head count, and apparently she's hatched 7 so far. Sorry if the focus isn't 100%, but I had a REALLY angry mother hen thrashing and pecking in my other hand when I snapped this picture.



But wait, there's more!
Went and checked on the duck food last night after I finished with the chickens, and ALSO heard peeping. I thought that they were done laying for the year, but it turns out the little a-holes had been hiding their eggs in their nest box by burying them with straw every morning. They've got 4 ducklings and 4 more eggs that they're sitting on. I snapped this quick photo last night, and I tried to get a better one of all 4 ducklings this morning, but ducks are downright vicious with you when you mess with their babies and I couldn't get an in-focus shot because they were literally throwing themselves at me.


Idiot birds; you're supposed to hatch eggs in the spring!

 

I forget who told me that, but I'm not sure if I believe it or not. It seems burpee supports it somewhat. I haven't had to water for weeks, too much rain here.

I water mine frequently when they're seedlings and then progressively less as they get larger. Except for the Tomatoes, usually by August I'm not watering at all, even though it's the driest time of year. I only water in August if I notice production stalling and no new fruits setting on.

 

hmm dunno we water as needed and the looks of the soil. Its prob too much but when the tomato plants are wilting I think it needs water...

 

Tomatoes I water all summer long. They don't send deep taproots down like cucurbits or root vegetables do.

The last 2 years my garden has been over grown with weeds. I can't pick them fast enough. What is the best way for me to make sure i don't have this problem next year? Does mulch help? I'm really not interested in laying down landscape fabric and cutting holes.

 

I've had luck putting down a thick layer of straw. Theory is weeds don't get the light and also helps soil retain moisture. Still get some weeds but it helps. I've won some battles with weeds, but I'll never win the war.

 

even cutting down the number so that i can pull them will help.

grind up the weeds as they come up and very agile.
