yeah those are nice. I've been looking on craigslist to see if they have any on a deal/steal but no luck yet. I did find the mini tiller for $75 just needed new fuel hoses.

 

I till it up to start the year, but the weeds just keep coming all year long

 

same with ours, thats why we use the mini tiller and just keep at them. bout once a week or so we go through with the mini tiller and take out the weeds as best as possible in the walkways and as close as we can to the plants.

 

Thanks . Tomatoes are just turning red now .( Beefsteaks) Had a ton of yellow squash and green peppers too . Cucumber beetles got the cukes though .

My tomatoes have a vertriculum wilt or something like that anyway . I looked it up , fungus in the soil . Makes it look like you never water , leaves turn brown from the bottom up but the actual tomatoes are fine .

I read a book on food plots for deer and it said too much tilling just invites more weeds . I till about every 3-4 years but I do rotate the crops . I also found out you should remove as much plant matter as you can from the garden at the end of the season then cover the soil with clear plastic .

 

Great thread. I replaced the kids play area with a garden 3 years ago. The soil was mostly clay so had to till in a bunch of sand and compost. At the end of the season I till in additional compost and chicken manure and cover with mulch. I don't till in the spring, just plant and rotate the crops. Family loves the fresh produce.

I do till every spring before planting, and then use the mantis tiller once or twice a week if I don't straw. I agree that the tilling can cause more problems by chopping up certain types of weeds and just spreading them, but i do it anyway with a big garden and pull by hand up close to the plants. Garden got away from me this year with weeds but you'll have that sometimes. My garden is just about to finish up too. Tomatoes have produced well but browned. Normally i put epsom salt in the hole when I plant them but forgot to do that this year and am paying for it. Doesn't totally stop the browning but helps quite a bit. The pictures I've seen on here sure are some fine gardens.

 

One of our jalapeno plants is getting renamed to "dragon toe" jalapenos. They are super hot, Im talking equal or hotter than a habanero...good but you definitely have to eat them with something...

Not really , just a couple times some organic stuff . Just a pinch per plant .Thanks

 

You must have some good soil!
We need to add some peat to out soil as it gets very compacted. I doused our garden with some good fertilizer and we have had a good run of stuff. The soil still needs lots of work though.
