For what it's worth, a reasonably priced option that works with our tailgate is the Thule T2 classic. I switched from the Yakima HoldUp 2, which is a slightly nicer rack, but the T2 classic is matte black, looks great, and holds the bikes very securely. It doesn't come with integrated cable locks, but those are garbage anyway and I use a secondary cable/u lock at all times with my MTB on the back.

I don't recall if the T2 classic is different, but the T2 pro will still get hit by the tailgate with the trays down. Since the Classic is basically a Z in the pivots I suspect the same problem will occur.

The pro hits because of the higher wheel trays and different pivot design. I have had the classic on my car for ~2 weeks now and it fits flawlessly.

So as some of you know I have been struggling to find a decent rack set-up. Well I solved the problem and couldn't be more happy. This system allows plentiful ground clearance and the bikes are solid, also allows the RTT to mount between the bikes. Have a race in Canada at this end of this month so we will really get to see how well this works! Fab shop did it in two hours, ~$130 out the door

Finally took a break from the mountain bikes for just the 2nd ride on the Surly. Also found another repair stand for a decent price on craigslist. And another bbp tacoma was at the trailhead. All around decent day.

Do you find your dakine pad rubs a flat spot on the plastic on your tailgate? I used my raceface pad for the first time the other day and noticed today a rub mark on the tailgate plastic top right where the bike was.

Will probably try the cut pool noodle trick and see if that helps.

Saw a few rigs with RTTs and pads this past weekend at Brian Head for the gravity series race.

The ones I saw were brake light height or so, so more of a "tall-dium" height. I was doing my homework and taking notes for the exact reason as you.

I've been looking to do a very similar setup. Likely going to shamelessly steal this idea or some iteration of it. Maybe have a folding design for the pegs?

Alright ya hooligans, Labor day is approaching. Any good ideas on quieter riding areas within driving distance of the Salt Lake Area, say a 6hr radius?

I will say my BAMF half rack will fit bikes and tailgate pad, but the dropper must be compressed. Not to mention you can't find anything in the bed of these DCSB if bikes are in it. I also have a swingaway, too much of a pain for me to run a pad. Can't beat the convenience of those though.

I run my dropper compressed anyways when it is in the bed. Hell, most manufacturers tell you to.

Got my eyes on a C4 fab rack, just waiting to see if labor day brings around any discounts on rack or tent.
