HDR Photography

Hey guys,

Looks like a lot of great photographers in TW and thought maybe you guys could give me some tips.

First, I'm shooting with a Rebel XSi. Figured out how to do the auto bracketing and been practicing with that. Picked up photomatrix pro to do the hdr.

So how do you capture a moving object? Right now I'm using the continuous shooting mode for 3 shots. Obviously you can't hold the camera in the same position while in a moving vehicle shooting a moving vehicle.

Basically I'm curious to what kind of settings you guys are using for any of your HDR shots and any other tips you might have. Thanks!

 

I personally haven't gone any HDR with moving objects. In my mind, I think it is almost impossible.

 

You would have to photoshop the effect if you were shooting a moving object and wanted the HDR effect. The thing about HDR is taking 3 different pictures at different exposures and combining them. This would work on the moving object because the background wouldn't line up when merging the images.

at least thats my take on it...

 

You can actually use one picture in raw format and just adjust the exposure one 3 different copies of the picture. It just takes a little more time and might not look as good

 

I'm curiuos to how your getting your shots so rich in color and vivid? Are you doing a lot of editing afterwards? If so what kind?

Sorry for all the questions, but I just wanna maximize the photos I will be taking.

you can't do a true HDR with a moving object

The idea is to capture a dynamic range over a series of photos that neither the sensor nor your eye could capture at once.

I haven't worked with them enough to get a good one down yet, but here's one I made with three different exposures taken in a 4 stop gap.

You can mess with the saturation in Photomatix Pro itself. I only mess with the colors when there isn't enough. For instance, the image was taken during an overcast or in a shadow. You get the best colors when you get plenty of light on it.

Those are sweet pics and I need to learn more. I spent over $1000 on a camera that I have only used in the auto setting.

 

I took photos with it at the last one and you can't even tell they came from a good camera. I'll have it with me.
