I called 4wp is the only place and they wanted 1000 to install my ARB lockers so I imagine 1000 should stay the same even if I added gears. Though knowing 4wp they may try to add even more for labor

$400 with the diffs out, $800 if left in. That's for both.

That's not bad! I want to roughly see how much others cost for when I make the decision to regear
    Thanks fellas!

hello... i'm new to the regearing of the axels and so pardon my lack of knowledge. i was told that if/when i start adding armor and overland items to my 2017 Taco OR that i should start to think about regearing my axels to regain power. so my questions are:

    1. at what point can i see, hear, feel that i need to regear?
    2. i just put on rock sliders from Avid and both of them was about 75lbs. i plan of fully armoring the bottom with steel vice aluminum. will i need to regear after that?
    3. shortly after i plan to put a bed rack to house a tent, and recovery gear. will i need to regear after that?
    4. i have an Icon Stage 7 on my Tacoma OR '17 now and a CBI Dual swing arm with tire relocation rear bumper on the way. i don't think i need to regear at this point, but after the armor/overland items i would think i would. would i need to?

the tacoma is still under warranty and so i don't want to screw with that just yet.

    thanks in advance!!

    1. Completely subjective, when you think you need to regear, do so.
    2. I have full sliders and armor front bumper and winch and noticed no drop in power
    3. Probably not.
    4. You again likely won't notice much of a difference unless you increase your tire size.

Tire size is generally when you will notice a power loss.

ahhhh... yes.... i did forget to mention that i will be moving up from a 265/18 to a 285/75/16 KO2s. i don't really want to regear at this point if i can help it. will i need to?

Probably not, most people do not regear. It will be an improvement but if I were you I would see how the truck feels after your upgrades first then make the decision to regear.

I have those tires E rate with 300 lbs of steel and its still alright. I still get 18 mpg on the high way @ 75 mph. The truck does get annoying if any wind or on a grade but I always forget I'm driving a truck. I think mostly in my head for me since the peddle gets so hard to push when you want more. Previously made a trip in my dads Pilot 3.5L and it has the two cylinder deactivation for eco mode but the peddle was just so soft and smooth through the whole motion and I notice the rpm's sits much higher for acceleration and 80-85 mph.

My plan is to regear when I move up to 315 KM2 after these KO2's wear out. Might be awhile since after 20K still looks like I'm breaking in the tires which is a good and bad thing lol.

Finally got my gear issue worked out. 4.88s deff gives it some spunk back. Luckily i got to experience 4.56 gears it made my mind up about needing the 488 gears. Running 33x12.50 with 20" wheels. I actually change into 6th gear going up a hilll now. Running about 2100 rpms at 75 2200 rpms at 80.

Sorry guys, meant to post up an update.. I love the truck with the new gears makes driving much more enjoyable with the larger tires. I'm a big fan of the gears so far although it's been less than 400 miles. The shop that did the work here in Phoenix Arizona Differential Specialists did an amazing job. No odd noises or humming whatsoever, the gears are buttery smooth. There was another '17 TRDOR that was leaving the shop as I dropped mine off so that made me feel good. I have not been able to get an accurate MPG calculation since the installer recommended that I avoid constant speeds thru the first 500 miles. It most definitely has more low end power in the streets and the freeway driving is much improved over the stock gear set. The transmission is no longer downshifting trying to keep up speed on the freeways like it did before. At 75mph I am sitting around 2100-2200 rpm, keep in mind I have 33" tires and have not done any calibration on the speedo, so I'm not sure how bad it is off yet. I am driving the truck to Vegas this weekend and will bring my GPS to reference my actual speed. I'm hoping to give a better review on it then. All in all, i give the Nitro 4.88 gears a big thumbs up at this point!
