I have a 16 OR not on the recall list and the same thing was done with mine although I was told that the gasket also was replaced however there was no mention of brake fluid or brake gaskets being replaced. Meaning it looks like they just split the diff and put rtv in there. I confronted my dealer about this and Toyota corp and it got no where. The dealer and field engineer both said it was no big deal if RTV got into the diff. Toyota corp wouldn't answer my direct question of whether this was the correct way to fix it and said that the Toyota techs are trained to do it only the way Toyota wants them too.

All dealerships do this kind of crap. I would have rejected a Corolla loaner too if I needed a pickup for daily use. Then the dealerships are in such a hurry to get people out of their hair that they are doing an "anything goes" type of job and fixing vehicles with duct tape and kit string. So frustrating, especially after paying so much for a vehicle.

Found another invoice with the part number for the gasket. It does not appear to be the "official" fix as it actually does have a pre-made gasket.

However, and this is a BIG however, the OP rushed the dealer and refused a rental car when provided. This was the product of the customer going "I NEED IT DONE NOW" without regard to actually taking into consideration they may "half-ass" (not that I'd call RTV half assed, but they didn't follow the official procedure I mean) the job just to get you back on the road. Remember, there are always 3 sides to a story. How about acting like a mature adult and be accommodating from the consumer side? Take it back when you're ready or have other transportation means available if you actually need a truck for truck purposes.

FWIW I'd rather have a well done RTV gasket than a paper one anyway.

Looks like a nicely done job to me. Having a bit ooze evenly out the sides isn't an issue. IF any gets inside it won't cause any harm whatsoever.

I'd personally rather have RTV then a chintzy paper gasket any day.

I have RTV on my rear diff and front diff from having gears installed.

I used RTV on my Tundra rear diff after installing a LSD and it didn't leak a drop in 75k miles. I would accept this and move on.

I actually don't understand people think I rushed dealer by not accepting Corolla. If you read it you would have known they took truck on Friday and I had already accepted it's fate of two month wait. I had daughter pick me up Friday morning and then searched Enterprise lots on my own to find a replacement. I never sat there demanding it be done that day.

I'm curious, have you addressed this with the dealer before running to the internet for answers?

Okay, so what are you driving in the meantime? They offered you a rental car, regardless of what type of car that is and you still refused and had someone else pick you up? That's something that isn't lining up with me. Is no car/rental better than a corolla to you?

Also, have you even talked to the dealer at all before coming on the internet? If you felt it wasn't the correct procedure or solution, why did you pick the truck back up?

You must have missed the part where he said he needs a truck for his farm work...I feel the pain on that one. Can't put hay bales on the roof of a Corolla, or drive through a field with one!

I have addressed with dealer. They have told me it is a permanent fix. But service manager asked me to email him pictures of the repair, which I did and am awaiting a response.

I did not look under truck at dealer. I didn't feel I needed to. IT is a dealership is what I had in mind. Who else would follow proper instructions better than a Toyota Tech. I did check it when I got home but it was because I had heard a couple clunks when coming to a stop on way home.

Most manufacturers use rtv from the factory for engines, transmissions and differentials. I'd rather use grey rtv but it is what it is. Rtv when the surface is clean is probably better than any gasket anyways.

That's your first mistake. Never trust anyone. I check my oil and everything they say they did, before I leave. EVERY TIME.

One time, an Audi dealer damaged 2 wheels on an Audi changing tires, said nothing to me. If it wasn't for that walk around, I would have never seen the damage. Try going back in 2 weeks and telling them it was damaged when you left...you're screwed.

I also like to mark the parts I know they are replacing so I know they did...oil filter is a big one.

Yeah, Toyota uses FIPG. Formed-In-Place Gasket. It's amazing stuff.

Bottom line is, it was a messy job, and why did they use it if there's a gasket included with the recall kit? It's not about the quality of the repair (to me at least), but the fact you didn't get what you were told you got. There's a well defined repair and TSB for this problem, and this isn't the repair. Simple as that.

Kinda of why I was seeking all of you guys input. The rental part is of no concern. I"m too big for a corolla and it would not fill my needs. I would pay out of pocket for proper transportation if that's what it took. No need to take a corolla for it to just sit in my driveway.

The dealership is not Toyota. They are an independent contractor that sell Toyota vehicles. Big difference.

Hey, if it works, go with it. I would have never took it in with a weep if it were me.

I didn't take it for weep. In fact I did not know it was weeping. I was there for service and another Tsb concerning driveshaft alignment where they replace both rear leaf springs.
