Hey guys I just switched over to OEM pads and rotors and I've been noticing a faint burning smell after longer trips. I finally tracked it down to my breaks and I can tell just on my morning commute to work which is about 2 to 3 miles away from my house, my rotor and brakes are super hot. Could I have messed something up in there? I did notice my brake fuild was just above the max level after the change and tried to remove a bit but it's still slight over, could that be it or did I mess something up on the brake pad change?

Did you twist a line by mistake? Clean the oil off the rotors? Sticky caliper? Is there a temperature difference between both sides?

I don't think there is any oil on there and it has been a week since the install. The rotors are very hot and I don't think I twisted the lines as I think the opposite would happen right? Maybe decreases performance from the brakes and I am experiencing, kind of good performance.

Get a laser temp gun and take a reading on the rotor surface after a drive and report back with the temperature numbers. Brakes do get hot but if they are smoking and smell like burnt bronze you have a problem.

I will get some temps, thank you. If one is hotter than the other do you think think it's a caliper problem or maybe just I didn't push the caliper back enough? How do I fix that just take off the caliper and depress them again? Is my brake fuild level concerning at all? Could that be too full and push the pads when I'm not braking?

More than likely the piston is sticking. Replacement of the caliper will be required as well as the pads and rotors. If the rotor overheats the metal gets to a very hard brittle state and is prone to shattering.

Dude that would be killer the oem pads and rotors were like 180 bucks! Wonder how much calipers go for? Shitty deal, ok I will check it out further also I get the squeaky brake sound a low speed braking... is that anything that would add on here?

Did you lube the slide pins and back of the pads?

I couldn't get to the sides of the pins because of the rubber grommet, is there away to remove that?

There is no rubber grommet on the slide pins. I think your thinking of the pistons. The slide pins are to 2 pins you pull out to release the pads. They have about the same diameter as a pencil

Ah I did not, i will put some on there but the slid out easy enough I thought. In my mind I thought made that was for Easter access next time the brakes are changed I did not think the pads could be slicking to the rotor from that. Is there a chance I did not push my piston back far enough?

If you got the pads in there then the piston is far enough in. The lube is to eliminate squeaks. Apply to the back of the pads and the slide pins.

Will do what about the possible over heat if those are lubed up and the heat is still there the only other thing could be the caliper right?

Chances are that's what it is. The caliper is incredibly easy to swap out. I can walk you through it if need be. Another way to tell is when it gets hot is to jack up the wheel and see how easily the wheel spins.

Ok, if the wheel doesn't spin easily then maybe the caliper is sticking, if the wheel does spin easy would we be thinking it could be anything else, the brake fuild level does not concern you army all correct?

No. Let's just make sure the calipers are the culprit before we go further.

175 on both sides... after about 10-15 mins of city driving stop and go in the Walmart parking lot. The smell was a feint quick smell and not something I'm positive was coming from the brakes I never seen smoke and my braking performance seemed to be really good. I will brake grease those areas once I get back, also to note there is nothing between the piston and brake pads, should there be?

Depends on the brand of pads you get. There should be a pad shim. The Wagner thermoquiets have a built in pad shim.

I got the oem pads and rotors

Where are the wheel bearing located? In the life of my truck I have not replaced or worked on the drive train parts at all.
