Read through this and don’t be a jerk. RTV is not part of the TSB repair. A gasket is though.

We all agree RTV gets the job done. When it’s done by your shade tree mechanic. Not the dealership.

Also FWIW, Permatex is just the junk “name” brand they sell at the local auto stores. They aren’t anything special.

I can see it partially being because truck things can cause damage.
Think of it this way I was loading stuff in my bed and scratched the bed.

Renting out a truck that may be used for truck things can be risky in a way. Especially when you consider most rentals from enterprise etc are used for a year or two then put up for sale as certified pre owned.

Its not the same as going to Uhaul and renting a truck to do truck things.
So I can see enterprise or a dealer being hesitant to give out a truck. Especially when someone is saying they need a truck for truck things.
For that matter owners manual even says don't tow etc during first few 1000km. So what if the rentals are all fresh barely done break in?

I dunno about the US but I know here farm use trucks have different plates that say farm on them, which allows them to use dyed fuels since they aren't taxed fuels.
So if the vehicle OP has was not bought and registered as a work purpose vehicle, I don't see a single reason why the dealer would need to do anything for him besides offering a corolla etc. Like the other post from someone else.
There is nothing in the warranty that says they need to provide the same vehicle.

They can choose to do so if they want to please their customers, but that's all.

OP, you wanted a rush job done to your truck when there was 78 trucks before you and the dealer was nice enough to put your farm truck need issue before others that were before you, and offered you a rental vehicle too boot. and then they did the repair because of your rushed schedule using RTV instead of a paper gasket and your not happy at the results of the whole scenario? You could have just taken your truck home and told the Dealer to call when all parts and proper loaner was ready.

I had to remove the rear gear on my race car more times than I cared to count. I used RTV on several occasions, mostly when I didn't have a gasket available. RTV is cheaper and pretty reliable but it makes a mess for the next time you need to replace the gear. The surface prep with RTV is a pain hence the preference for the gasket plus the gasket is quicker to slap on. Personally I would have done the same as OP even though the silicone would get the job done. There is no reason a dealer can't service a vehicle to the same standard that the truck left the lot on. Especially with the resources they have access to and a TSB to go with it. Hopefully they make it right

They work fine when done right, but they aren't as forgiving as RTV. Gotta be careful with RTV though.... some people get a little crazy with it.

RTV actually works a little better than a gasket in this application. Permatex makes good stuff.... junk name brand is not quite what I'd call it. Many manuals call it out by name.

Just to reiterate.... RTV is probably better in this application anyway.

Now to be fair, he bought an expensive truck and really shouldn't have to be driving around in a corolla or living without the truck he/she is paying/paid for. If they are going to do the work, they should do the work right...... in this case that means following the MFGs instructions by sticking the proper gasket in there. Doing anything different will cause the OP further issues if a warranty claim comes up.

RTV is probably better in this application, but it's not what I want in there as long as the vehicle is under warranty.... and the dealer should be doing it the way Toyota says to do it.

My last vehicle was a 1996 Tacoma by the way that never had issues, ran as good when I traded it for this 2016.
You hit the nail on the head with my concerns. I did not build the truck. I do not half-butt what I do in life. I have already went out of my way to provide myself
with a truck until this is cleared up. It's probably beneficial to someone else to be able to see what others are experiencing across the nation. Thanks

"Is this what toyota had in mind for a fix" -They specified a gasket so no, strictly speaking

"Is it proper fix?" - Absolutely! When properly applied, I've seen it seal better in some cases

"It looks like bob's backyard did the work" - That is the only downside to it, it "looks" shady, but that's purely aesthetics, it works when sometimes there's nothing else available or more practical.

If I was that dealer and wanted to take care of my customers, I would have ordered a couple rolls of gasket making material and have the techs make the gasket in house. Not because it will work better, but just because it looks better and to avoid this type scenario.

"What should I do?" - It's really your call. Your warranty will be good, and it's a recall so you have nothing to really be concerned about you should be covered.

"They RTV is uneven and on top is not even evident. I'm concerned" - If there's no leak, it's sealed. If properly torqued, it should stay that way.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Just pointing out that these two points you made contradict each other in the eyes of the warranty (a legal contract). Below is the OP's update after speaking with a Toyota Case Manager. The Case Manager's reaction, according to the OP, is proof enough that this work left as-is would be enough evidence to likely deny a future warranty claim on this piece of the vehicle. The dealer's documentation has that the official fix was performed on the truck, not this alternative method.

    Note to all:
This thread isn't about the OP demanding a truck loaner (which he said he didn't), or demanding to jump the recall wait list to the top (which he said he didn't), or rush/pressure the dealership to perform the fix now (which is actually the dealership's choice to do--if they did), or to complain that he had to rent his own truck to meet his business needs while the truck was in the shop (which he hasn't complained about). This thread is about 3 things:
    1. Safety, which we can all agree that while the tech should have cleaned the exterior application area more, the fix done is an acceptable industry safe application.
    2. Whether or not the work done is acceptable in the eyes of Toyota Corporate for the sake of his warranty still being valid on the affected parts of the truck.
    3. The dealership basically committing fraud on the truck's warranty service documentation to Corporate, saying they performed the recall to spec.
