I was in this boat and frankly could care less about 2 gen vs 3rd gen because both are great trucks! I was looking at used truck with around less than ~ 20,000mi really no more than ~30,000mi 2015's & 2014's MTs and they were right under or near $30,000. Someone said sales, wifey etc.., said look new. Dealers were not really looking to move on price or trade-in because some sucker or wealthier person is born every minute. So I started researching the 2017's pretty heavily (this is last December 2016) and found my truck for a few grand more than the used and it was BRAND NEW!! No previous owner, no "un-known" history to what happened in those 20k to 30k miles, more wiggle room on trade in and price, more options for the MT, and with perfect credit better financing - it was a no-brainer. Of course, I have never purchased a used vehicle before so was a bit apprehensive and am fully in new camp.

Where do you live OP? Where I'm from 5 winters on an untreated truck will take a big chunk out of its lifespan, rust may render it inoperable by 2028.

I agree 100% with you. Your description was exactly my dilemma a year ago, and I bought new.
Maybe if I have been offered an used truck with a well known history and record of care and maintenance, no accidents, etc. coming from somebody close (or a relative) perhaps I will consider the choice to buy used in this particular case. (And even that, still I'm not sure that a big repair will happen).
