I have a 16' DCSB OR. Not sure how best to explain this. When leaving my house in the morning, driving slowly up my driveway (which is a very long gravel driveway with a very slight incline the entire way) at approximately 10mph (or less), my truck will shift gears to what feels like 5th or 6th gear. It sounds and feels like it's bogging down and it almost brings my truck to a complete stop unless I give it quite a bit of gas to make it downshift again to get me up the hill. I don't mind it doing it in my driveway as much, but am worried about it doing this while offroad somewhere. What if I need to slowly crawl up a steep incline of some sort and losing my momentum could be dangerous? Is this the "bogging down" I've seen some others complain about? I can stomp the gas and get it to downshift to stay in lower gears to keep me going steadily up the hill, but I don't feel like I should have to stomp the gas pedal to drive slowly up my driveway?

Am I being ridiculous? Would love some insight from you guys.

Do you need to know, or care?
Use ECT, or better yet, move the lever to the left and shift yourself.

    Sounds like something's not right...

The "bogging down" everybody is complaining about is in the 30-70 m.p.h. range

    Not in 1st-2nd...

Pretty sure at 10mph in 5th gear you would stall or feel a lot more than a little bogging down. I would bet it at least cant be going that high.

However I do have to say that the low end rpm range in the truck is abysmal, even in 2nd gear. I think you are feeling what this engine performs like at lower rpms, but it still shouldn't come to a standstill without you punching the gas pedal to the floor.

Aside from that (I only owned the manual trans version), can you feel the shift points and feel how many gears it shifts up?

Also, post a video if you can.

How is this a useful response?

At least explain why you think OP is being ridiculous.

I personally think OP has an honest question.

I agree with first response. Use S mode and tackle your driveway in 2nd.

Thank you all for the feedback. I will try and post a decent video. I can use the ECT button and I don't have the issue, but I really feel like I shouldn't have to use the ECT button or other odd combination of S-mode gears to keep my truck from doing this?

When I'm rolling down the highway, I don't have any problems. Only at extremely slow speeds.

I had a problem with my truck shifting up super early coming down the hill from my house. To the point that when I went to press the gas nothing would happend and it would drop several gears.

I bought a SSpro and it seems to have done away with it. So you could just use "S" mode while in your driveway and pop it back to D once you get out on the hiway.

Certainly a lot easier and cheaper than selling your truck or buying a new home.

ECT and S mode is how to drive these trucks. Just leaving it in D and hoping for the best is what all the fuss is about.

It's the 21st Century. Probably not goinhg to get any better.

Totally agree.... Toyota made the tranny/motor combo to meet some MPG bullshit..., but they were smart enough to leave US the option to "override" the Nanny shit...!!
I love all the options I've got with the tranny, etc... Works for me !!

As you describe the grade and speed, the truck should be in 1st or perhaps if you back off a bit after you get rolling, it will upshift to 2nd and then not downshift under part throttle. Try S mode and get a feel for what rpm should be in 1st, 2nd and perhaps 3rd at these speeds. If it's in any gear higher than 3rd and not downshifting readily under part throttle, something is wrong. This should NOT be normal 3rd gen behavior. I have over 35K miles on mine, have had the trans shift programming TSB updates and just got a new CPS. I spent yesterday driving in very steep, narrow residential streets yesterday (Berkeley/Oakland Hills if anyone is familiar with the area) and felt my engine and trans behaved about as well as one would expect for any modern automatic vehicle: plenty of power, appropriate part-throttle downshifts, etc. I drove about 150 miles yesterday, lots of urban freeway and the aforementioned hilly neighborhoods, plus downtown city traffic, multiple climbs from sea level to 1000+ feet. Started the day with mpg average showing as 16.9, ended at 22.0 US mpg.

My 17 goes in tomorrow morning for it's first 6 month check-up. I always feel like mine is searching for the gear to be in. It will run up and down on level road while coasting, makes it a little jerky like it is too high gear and bogging down. Stomp on pedal and it will drop 2 or 3 gears and then pick up and take off. On ANOTHER shift issue, I leave house go about 0.2 mile and have to make a hard turn onto side road, during the turn, if I give it gas , the motor revs way up, around 3-3.5 k rpm, then get a big thud as it drops into lower gear. Acts exactly like other vehicles when the transmission is low on fluid. It has latest flash in it. I will post back results and explainations after service.
