Camped there a few years ago during Labor Day weekend. Holy crap...between the wind and elevation, I can definitively say that it is in my top 3 for coldest camp nights so far.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with being right next to a lake. That makes it chilly!

Another member on TW had it custom made years ago and it has been well traveled since. I think mine is the 4th or 5th truck it has been on. Works great to get the spare out from under the truck or in the bed when camping or off-roading. I leave it off the majority of the time so I can have full use of the bed. Uses the bedrail cleats to mount which makes for an easy on and off. I need to add some Rotopax gas and water containers on the sides at some point.

We saw it from just west of the Idaho/Oregon border. And yes it was indescribably, beyond words, you'll never understand it unless you see it awesome.

The eclipse was anticlimactic from Owens Valley. Your pic is amazing. Makes me wish I had gone further north.

Nice, love that area. Was the water low enough to make the crossing?

Ehee.. we made it, but I was scared for sure. We walked the crossing at least 10 times and debated on crossing it for about 45 minutes. And then my friend just went for it and made it. Dry intake and I'm a little taller so I made it fine too. Definitely pushing it though..

The next morning it had risen about 4" so we took the dirt road out. I wasn't about to cross it again.

Solar eclipse is one of those odd things where 99% coverage is just "hmm... that's sort of interesting I guess" while 100% is "mother of god, that is the most terrifying and cool thing I've ever seen". Being in the path of totality is not remotely like being even just a bit outside of it I now realize. I'm glad we went to all the effort!

In the run up to totality we thought it was sort of cool. When it was in the high 90s you are like - my it is sort of dim, almost like a brightish full moon. If you look at the sun (with proper protection) it just kind of looks like a crescent moon - nothing to write home about. But when the shadow of the moon sweeps over and it goes to 100% coverage it is just freaky. The sky is unreal and the sun just being a ring of corona elicits some sort of primal fear response.

We were lucky to be up high as well where you can see the shadow coming at you in the distance - it travels at about 3 miles per second. We stopped even looking at the sun, glasses or no, for about two minutes before totality so we could watch the horizon and our surroundings. As the shadow races in your direction you see any clouds on the horizon go black and the sky directly over head fading to black as well while you are still in sunlight (albeit dim sunlight). Then it goes totally black and you know it is safe to look up at the sun again without glasses and you find to be this surreal ring of corona where the sun should be. Meanwhile there is what is sort of like a 360 degree sunset around you but it really isn't a sunset and also looks just wrong somehow. It was all really awe inspiring.

It is also pretty much impossible to capture the experience with photos or video. We just don't have any frame of reference for it. Photos of a sunset we "get" because we've all seen a sunset, we know what being in a sunset is like so we can extrapolate that real experience to the photo or video we see. With this actually being in it was a totally new and weird experience despite having seen endless photos and videos of total eclipses. Hard to describe.

Good news is the US gets another chance to see one in 7 years! No forty some odd year wait this time around!
