I only have one key from the time I bought my truck. Went to ace hardware today and they said they can't make a key for my 11' off road. Weird because they made one for my 07' off road. Any ideas where I can get one made without going to the dealership?

Not sure what you have in your area but in the Houston area we have plenty.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
They should have been able to make a valet style key. Something to open the doors, but not start the engine.

The keys are chipped for anti-theft. That's probably why.

Home Depot, Lowes and Wallyworld all can make chipped keys and pair them to your ignition.

Even the chipped keys have some differences in different years. I have a 2015 and some places could make a chipped key but not for my vehicle. :( Check around because the prices vary greatly. I went with a locksmith and paid $40 for the key and $50 for programming. There is a thread around here that discusses the keys for different years in depth that I read before having mine made.

I programmed my key with Techstream, but I'm 98% sure you can program it yourself, by doing a Mexican hat dance. You need to make sure you get the right chipped key. Mine has a dot. Some have a letter. Either buy the keys off ebay and have the local locksmith cut them or buy them from the the locksmith. While you're at the locksmith, buy some plain cheap metal keys for hide a key, key in wallet, key in the safe, etc. I wouldn't trust the kid at the hardware store to cut it right. A key that's not cut exactly right will cause wear in the lock cylinder.

Thanks for the responses, ace and Home Depot said they can only do up to 2010, they charge 69 and mine is a 2011 with a G on it. Locksmith said they can do it for 85.

If you have AAA, just call them and have them come to you. They make chipped keys wherever you are for like $20

My 2015 is a "G" key too. Dealer wanted $200+, was quoted $150 somewhere and then they said they couldn't do it, went with the $90 to be done with it. It was an old independent shop that looked like it had keys for a Model A.

Committing insurance fraud may not turn out as planned. Although AAA is a bunch of scamming fucktards and they deserve to be taken advantage of, you would need to tell them your keys are "lost". After they come out and program your truck for the newly made key, there's a pretty good chance that your "lost" key won't start the truck anymore. Although, if you're OK with insurance fraud, you could then do the Mexican hat dance to add your "lost" key back to the truck.

How is AAA insurance fraud? It's the AAA roadside service, not AAA insurance

Not gonna get into a pissing match here, but you're buying "insurance" to take care of you if you have a disabling incident out on the road. Call it anything you want. I would never buy AAA and if you're cheating the system to save a buck, and get some of your $90/year premium back, well...

And you can call 3a, ask to talk to local contract locksmith, get your discount and your key. Then you got a spare. I just did the hat dance for my first gen. Folks across the street thought I was on dope and laughed. But saved $$. There's YouTube vids to do it.
