If I'm not mistaken, we are looking at the drivers side of the new transmission. Do we know what year the donor vehicle was?

No I do not know what year it is from. It was a pull and I have verified that it is A340E from numerous sources. Please tell me this is compatible w/ the 2.7L 2wd ext cab 2003 Tacoma?

If you don't know what engine or car it came off it's a little difficult, the bell housing could be completely wrong for your engine. The A340E was used in hundreds of different cars from different makes over different model years. I would swap the bell housing over from your old transmission to be sure.

You do have the right transmission, but there's that thing about the drive-by-wire vs. fly-by-wire. Someone else more knowledgable me should chime in about it.

    It will work.

Be sure to double check overall length, and if your slip yoke will fit to be 100% but it will bolt up, and work with your motor.

What does the casting mark on the bellhousing of the donor tranny say? The RZ stamped onto the tranny on your truck may indicate the 3RZ-FE engine, which you have. Just a guess.

Thank God...I was freaking. I can't believe all the misinformation on these tranny's and applications. The WIKI is totally wrong in numerous aspects. I've searched hours and still wasn't 100% on this purchase. Thanks for your help I'll tackle this in a few days. Any other things I should do while I have the tranny out? I plan on popping in a new rear main seal for starters.

While you do have the right tranny I would first make sure you won't run into any compatibility issues with the fly-by-wire vs. drive-by-wire since generally 03 and 04 had an electronic throttle.

I have no idea. The reason I bring it up is because right now I'm doing to PreRunner to 4x4 swap and after looking through a lot of build threads and write-ups most people with the '03/'04 trucks swap the output shaft instead of buying a new transmission because their trucks have an electronic throttle so they can't use pre-'03 transmissions and it's cheaper. I know for a fact Toyota put an electronic throttle (aka Drive-by-Wire or Throttle-by-Wire) in 2003 and 2004, but I don't know if it was in ALL Tacomas or if having a transmission from a non drive-by-wire truck will work.

Huh?? I have an A340E in my 1998, which is a fly-by-wire mechanical throttle.

This is much more encouraging - there is that kick-down cable I was harping about

These upside down pictures are screwing with me... ;)

What's the significance of the kick down cable?

The kickdown cable is troublesome and was overlooked by myself. This may not be possible without serious modification to control the kickdown..

The kickdown cable is related to the fly-by-wire throttle system, right?
