His transmission kickdown is controlled electronically. You can see the actuator mounted just behind the PRNDL on the trans in the truck

That's the answer I was looking for, he has a drive-by-wire throttle like I thought. So his donor transmission won't work?

It will work, as in it will bolt up and turn the pump and TC, but may not communicate with the ECU/TCM

    I'm currently looking for a solution>>>>

There ya go OP. Since your donor trans. came from a pre-2003 fly-by-wire truck it won't work on your '03 that uses an electronic drive-by-wire throttle. Without some modification, at least.

He just said it will work as far as far as bolting up? If it's an ECM issue, surely there is a way I can get around that. I can't believe out of all the hours of research, I haven't heard a word about this until now. On top of triple checking compatibility with dealers/transmission shops/etc.. That's ridiculous....

It's basically an issue of your donor transmission utilizing a mechanical throttle control versus the 03 to 04 transmissions which had an electronic throttle system.
I believe the '03 and '04 trucks had electronic throttles as a pre-cursor to the 2nd generation trucks which had drive-by-wire standard.

    To recap:

    1995-2002 utilize a Fly-by-Wire mechanical throttle system
    2003-2004 utilize a Drive-by-Wire electronic throttle system

You would think this would be included in any compatibility information, but that would be asking too much I guess. I am not surprised believe me...this is a microcosm of my life lately...wow. Thanks for your help, I guess I'll have to sell this one and hope my current one holds up long enough to get by.

Hold on don't lose hope there might be a way to bypass it or make it work. Wait for @MrCrowntown to reply.

A lot more talk about this transmission in the supra world. They talk about doing the Kickdown cable mod, where you basically put tension on the cable, and tie it off with that tension present. This obviously doesn't cover the potential communication issue, but a step closer in understanding what we got here(you got, not we). The only true way to check if it will work, is to try and slap it in!

@Austin_Mike can you take a picture of your throttle body please?

So, that confirms you have a provision for a kickdown cable and no throttle by wire.

Now, are there the same number of connectors on the new trans that are on the one in the truck?? What differs and where?

Just trying some deductive reasoning at this point.

The tag was under the pallet...how it stayed from CA to TX is beyond me. So I should be 100% good right?

I think so. Everything I saw said that it would bolt up and work, but no specifics as to why it WOULDNT work together, other than overall nervousness of the swap

Toyota is very friendly with utilizing parts across years and models. Bless their tiny Japanese hearts

Nice...well I can't thank you enough as well as Bart and others. What a roller coaster of emotions today...I'll do the swap this weekend and the rear main seal. I'm going to see what other things I should do while having the tranny dropped.

If they obtained that off an 03 with a 2.7, then you have an exact match - get to wrenching...

ProTip - use a transmission jack. Even the cheapo harbor freight version will suffice - It's much easier than muscling the trans around.

Yes I def plan on getting a trans jack. Is there anything else I need to replace for preventive maintenance? Flush the fluid and change filter? Or just check it and install if it looks good?
