aftermarket wheels

I have a 2009 toyota tacoma. Double cab prerunner. Came with steel wheels. I just purchased aftermarket alloy rims. Rims are from BLACK RHINO ALLOY WHEELS. Is there 4 sensors on my truck or is there 5 including my spare tire? If there is 5 then can i use 4 new sensors and keep the spare tire with the oe sensor on its own?

 

The 2009's and up do not have sensor in the spare, so you only have 4.

 

And just keeping one won't do it. The computer is tied to each sensor. Just missing one will cause the TPMS light to come on.

 

Oh OK. I was planning on buying a set of used OEM tpms from the Tacoma alloy rims. Others say that I can re-use my steel sensors and just turn them 180*. Does that for sure work? Has anyone done that?

 

Yes, but if the tire is completely flat & driven on, the TPMS sensor will be damaged. With the correct TPMS sensor, it sits flush with the rim.

Also, if they're turned and you need the tire dismounted from the rim you are at the mercy of the tire changer to not rip the tire over the sensor and break/damage it.

After I bought my Tacoma, I was at a used wheel/tire place and was attempting to put a set of 4Runner rims on. The TPMS sensors wouldn't mount flat and they tried the turn-it thing and said it would be fine. I took one look at it and knew it was a PITA just waiting to happen and said "no".

You can also buy a set of bands that mount to the inside of the rim and allow the TPMS sensors to be mounted to them. They are supposed to work fine, but are an additional cost.

There is the "make/acquire an air tight canister and put the sensors in it"-mod.

There is the "take 'em out and live with the light"-mod.

Several options, pick your poison...

so here it is guys. finially got them rims on with the sensors. before and after pics

 

Has anybody tried a "stuff them in a small tubeless tractor tire and hide it in the storage compartment" mod? I would be really curious if this works. It sounds a little more clean and easy than building a PVC container or stuffing them in the spare.
