I have a 2016 Limited which comes with the premium JBL system. I have been thinking of insulating the doors with Dynamat. Since I'm going to be removing the panels I was thinking it may be worthwhile to look at upgrading the speakers, and I have several questions. Are the JBL speakers in the premium system any good? What is the model number? What would be a good upgrade without breaking the bank and using the same harnesses/connectors?

I have a 2017 sport with the jbl system and I wouldn't upgrade anything I think the speakers sound great and the subwoofer kicks just fine.it is really loud and plays clear.I think you would waste money getting something else.I had the jbl in my 2012 my 2016 and my current truck and love it the way it is.just my opinion.

Agreed. TRD OR with premium JBL package here, I also think they system sounds great. I listen to pretty much only XM radio which is a little bit clearer than normal radio but everything sounds great and the bass can definitely kick. I leave it on the stock equalizer settings too and it still bumps.

I agree with these guys. The JBL is very good and flexible as is. I plan only to add a deeper subwoofer. The system has a lot of "kick bass" (bass drum, higher end of the bass spectrum), but lacks the super deep bass of the 12" subwoofer I had in my previous Mustang. That said, I am in no hurry, and I listen to every kind of music except opera.

The only thing I would change about mine would be that I would like the highs to be a touch higher. I adjusted my ipod equalizer to treble booster and it helped. Other than that I love this system. 17 ORDCSB with JBL.

I have the system on my Sport and I think it sounds great for a factory system. Spend your money on other mods if you have any others planned.

I have the JBL system in my 2017 OR. The stereo shakes my rear view and side mirrors when I crank it. I could be nothing but pleased with the sound quality and sheer muscle of the system.

If I was going to spend money on anything else it would be bumpers and other off road / mall crawler gear.

Not sure, the JBL seems decent but if you're gonna rip, tear & insulate I would def consider a speaker upgrade as well. But I'm a guy who is ok with the JBL.

I've found I'm disappointed with the clarity of XM. I do agree it may be slightly more clear than normal FM & way better than AM but, after getting into an area where I can actually receive HD radio signal or listening to music off a media device it just seems XM is missing something. Pretty much the same with Pandora, iHeart & Slacker...just doesn't match the music I've downloaded or (on very rare occasion) when I break out a 20 year old CD.

2016 TRDOR w/ JBL and I wouldnt waste the money on upgrading. I never was a fan of JBL but the system they put in these trucks sound really good, better than some other cars with systems like Bose ( at least I think so)

Thanks for all the replies. I was just wondering if there was a known improvement for the JBL speakers I should know about before doing the insulation. Have any of the responders done the Dynamat insulation? Is it worth the effort? The Limited is pretty quiet as is, probably in part due to the Michelin tires. I hear more noise coming from behind the back seat, to be honest.

I have the same system as mentioned. Not impressed, but I'm not about to swap them out either ( the package came with JBL and it wasn't a must have option at purchase).
Sometimes jumping out of my GF's stock 3 series and going into my truck, we notice how muffled and muddy everything sounds. I used to build and compete in car audio, this system sounds mediocre with an 8" Bazooka tube at best. Some XM stations actually sound decent, but you really have to like what you're listening to to say it's "decent".

I upgraded to the OEM+ 4500 system with Dynamat on all 4 doors and the back wall for my TRD OR DCSB. It sounds better than the JBL, but not nearly the caliber system I have had in prior vehicles. It's all personal preference, and if you're not sure then keep it as is. I see a lot of others who are here happy with the JBL sound playing XM raido, and while better than FM... XM is not a high resolution sound like CD/DVD, Flac, or even 320kbps MP3.

If you listen to streaming services like Pandora or Spotify though bluetooth or aux... be sure to set them to the highest quality. It's possible the audio source is the limiting factor versus the speakers

Its an extra upgrade on TRD Models, not available on Manual transmission models for some reason.

Dynamat never hurts. It will lower the noise floor for sure.
