I have a 95 with the 3rz with 230xxx miles and it time to replace the cat. My question is what problems would it cause if I removed the cat altogether. I live in a county where DEQ is not required. Will this mess up my computer? Pro vs cons of this mod
    Thanks for any input

Plus your Mil will be on all the time.

Meaning if it also trips for another issue you don`t know .

Meaning a Code reader will need to be your new best friend

You can fool the computer (usually). But as above, you don't gain anything by removing it.

And the exhaust will smell like old ghetto Oldsmobile (makes me to put my air on recirculate what I see the one on front of me). If you don't require emission test you can put the cheapest aftermarket cat you can get. Will be much better than nothing.

If your cat is plugged there will definitely be gains if removing it, but if your cats fine then not so much. There is also ways to make the engine light not turn on. Just 2 days ago my 97 passed emissions with a hollowed out cat.

I'm not looking for any gains of removing it, it's pretty plugged up and right now I have other things I need to spend my money on

An aftermarket cat is less than a hundred bucks now so it seems like a no-brainer to me but it sounds like you've already made up your mind.

If there is a post cat O2 sensor (OBDii) you'll have computer and running issues to deal with.

OBDii was not required till '96. Not sure if your '95 was still OBDi, or if it was an early adapter.

If its OBDi it won't know the cat is gone. But even if you don't have inspections it's still illegal.

Idk what kind of issues you'd have without it, but you'd have to install an o2 simulator.

So the OP can visually inspect and see if there is a post cat O2 to know which his truck is....... then decide how to proceed.

If a test pipe is used in place of the cat, a cat can be reinstalled when funds permit. But I'd only do that on an obdi vehicle. Just my choice.

Yep, 95.5 has that too. You can see right there (pardon my cat skid plate slash cat anti theft device) :

Understood. Not what I meant. He states he has a 95.

Quick way to tell if its obdi (95) or obdii (95.5) is just look for the post cat sensor, as it will only be on the obdii

    Gotcha.

Didn't realize that 95 was only a 1/2 year of production. Most times when you hear something is an xx.5 model, the reference is to a mid production change of significance.

Rear o2 sensor has nothing to do with the engine running so it won't cause any negative performance, just a check engine light.

I'd just unbolt the cat, hollow it out, and put it back in and use one of the many methods to fool the ecm if you don't want to stare at the light.
