    Hey tacoworld!
I just purchased a 2008 TRD off road and the person that had the car before me had a crappy double DIN head unit that was always too dim to see. To fix that, I bought a Sony XAV AX100 head unit. I've replaced a unit before on a car, so I thought I'd do it again. Last time I just cut wires and twisted them together with the new ones and everything was peachy. This time I cut cords without thinking and I made it 10x harder because all I had to do was plug in the adapters that were already on the wires. now I'm stuck with a shit ton of wires sticking out of my dash and I'm kinda lost. YouTube searches gave my no insight on how to fix my dilemma, and I couldn't find anything after doing some quick searches here.
Basically, I cut the wires to the radio and now the harnesses that were already in the car are useless. Now I just have wires poking out of the dash.
Things I've figured out: I know all the colors for the speakers. There are 8 wires for the speakers and lots of wires I don't know the purpose. I think the blue and yellow stripe one is for the battery and the thicker brown one is the ground wire. There is also a red wire that came with the Sony head unit and once I hooked those wires up, the head unit turns on, but that was when my key was out of the ignition and the car was turned off. I figured something is wrong when the car is off but the radio is still on.

PLEASE someone tell me what all the wires that come out of the dash do. I don't know why it's been difficult to find this, but I figured that this is the best place to seek help.

This has been my life for a week now, and I'm excited to get this done. I just need some kind soul to help me.

This is where I messed up. See those wires I cut super close to the harness?? Definitely wasn't suppose to do that.

Bonus pick of the Taco I just bought. I'm having a blast so far!
Please, if someone has any info on the wires coming out of the dash, let me know! Links, videos(preferably), articles, personal advise, anything! I'm really close, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right, and I don't want to have to pay someone 100 bucks to install a radio.

PS: I'm new to the taco world and if there's some cool mods I can do, let my know in the comments

    Thanks for responding purpleman,
I actually tried this set up when I was first connecting the wires. It didn't work unfortunately.. Right now, my problem is that the red wire (which is connected to the grey wire coming from the dash) is suppose to tell the radio to turn off and it's not. The only way I can get the radio to turn on is to connect the red wire to the blue and yellow wire coming out of the dash. This wire has constant power leading to the unit so it wont turn off even if my keys aren't in the ignition. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know! I know I'm an idiot for cutting the wires...

All aftermarket stereos use an industry standard wire color system so this is a simple fix. That diagram in the link is correct :

Blue / yellow from truck = constant memory power connect that to he yellow wire only from your radio

Gray wire from truck to the red wire from your radio which is ignition / key on power

It sounds like this is what you have done so if it is not working then simply check your fuses I bet you popped one.

Crap, well I already replaced the one for the radio in the fuse box under the hood, and that didn't fix the grey wire problem I'm having. Is there another fuse I should be changing?

Check all of the acc fuses under the dash, I think one of those is for that and the cig lighter etc

Gotcha, this might be the fix I'm looking for. Thanks, Ill post later after I've looked at those fuses.

WOW thanks a whole lot Evenflow! I was getting so frustrated because I had everything else figured out! It was that fuse under the coin holder by your left knee. Switched it up and it worked like a charm. Thanks again!
