Oxidation. Look at the second pic and the complaint about the stuff used to remove the adhesive dripping down his door
Little Buffy Buffy with some compound and all that shit comes out.

Doesn't explain the indent...assuming there is one as he described

Ok just to humor you for the sake of argument, Logically, if it was the issue you're trying to identify it to be, then how come it's not a problem on all tacomas, I mean they all come down the same line, and they have all had equal amounts of time out of paint right?
At no time would the paint be soft enough to 1) cause the double sided tape to leave an impression in it from pressure 2) cause the double sided tape to produce a chemical reaction or cause a defect

You're making some assumptions but otherwise assuming this is true then I agree. Errors and inconsistencies happen in production all of the time.

My opinion only, but I would guess paint drying time would be one of the few tightly controlled items, being that they likely do it in an oven.

An aside: I have worked at the Toyota Wheel Plant in Vancouver BC (Canadian Auto Parts Toyota - "CAPTIN") and was involved in putting in a new robotic spray booth and drying oven for an expansion of their aluminum wheel making business (they make all the aluminum wheels for North American Toyota vehicles, as well as do contract wheel making for other brands).

I can tell you the painting and drying process at that plant was refined down to the second and quality control was insane. They was no "hey Joe.....d'ya think this one's dry yet?" going on. It was all very precise and very closely monitored.

I work in many plants as a contractor, and I've never worked in a plant with as high a level of quality assurance as CAPTIN. Funnily, at the time they even banned my boss from the site as they did not feel he had the correct attitude to be performing the work we were awarded. He was no longer allowed onsite not because he said or did anything, just because they watched him and decided he was not a level-headed and conscientious leader.

At CAPTIN, wheels that had the tiniest spec of dust in the paint would be rejected. If the spot could not be fixed to look perfect, they put the whole wheel back in the hot melt.

Anyways.......if you have aluminum wheels on you Tacoma, they were cast, machined, and painted in Vancouver by some very serious folks. No joke.

Great for the wheels but does not explain the color mismatched panels we have seen on many MGM trucks and fading paint.

True, but I'm thinking the problem has to be something other than not letting it dry long enough. I just can't imagine that step is anything other than a perfectly timed event.

Maybe it was damaged post production/predelivery toyota outsourced to fix it without disclosing the damage. Who knows but adhesive applied to the paint should not cause an indentation.

I was wondering if the OP had that dealer "diamond coat" or something applied. Y'know those sealers they hit you up for when you sign over your life to Toyota. That would not be under the badge.

Also wondering if the issue is that the badges were removed so soon after purchase on this truck. Sounds ridiculous I know, but maybe all of the paint shrinks, or changes colour slightly, but this happens under the badges first. If you wait, you don't see it. I dunno.

I just did my tailgate emblems this past weekend and had a similar issue at first.

I ended up using gasoline to wipe (read: elbow grease the hell out of) the remaining adhesive.IMG_4967.jpg . It doesnt mess with the clear-coat and also works well with spray paint overspray (ask me how I know).

Then proceeded to wax the rest of the truck.

    Good Luck!
