I have an '04 Highlander with 120k and a 'smart' transaxle that still shifts awful 1-2 in town with a specific throttle application. Harder or softer makes it shift better, but you are not driving better. In my book it's learned nothing.

The good news is it has gotten the same MPG since new. It's flawless on cruise under most any conditions, including the Smokies, that I've had it in.

That said, I've never heard anyone with any gen or motor/trans combo of Tacoma who liked their cruise control behavior. Even in flat Fl. mine is notably different than the Highlander.

So apparently not all Toyotas are created equal.

My wife has a new 2017 Highlander. 8 speed and same engine as my Tacoma. Flawless shifting but I think I could take her in the 1/4 mile lol.
Most important? My truck has a soul. Her Highlander has nothing. Just perfect. Boring. My truck bounces a bit a jiggles a bit and I gotta shift and I could hit something if I'm not careful and I can go over the center line without being told and I can merge over on somebody if I forget to check the mirrors and i have to turn the knob to have headlights and the right temperature. Soul to soulless.

Disconnecting the battery clears the short term memory and that should be good enough to start the re-learn procedure over . The only way to clear long term is with a scanner from Toyota or the aftermarket hacked Tis software , but I dont recommend doing this because if you have any warranty issues , the first thing a technician will do is perform a scan of long term memory .
Clearing short term memory will work fine . From there , put the pedal to the metal

Disconnecting the battery , then touching the terminals together is suppose to rapidly discharge any capacitors and clear short term memory . Touching the cables together when the battery is disconnected should save you the 30 minutes that you would normally wait for the capacitors to discharge on their own .
With this said , I personally use a scanner to clear short term memory on my own vehicles

It's the same with my Tacoma. On the slightest incline at highway speeds, the transmission will often downshift to 4th and the tachometer indicates 3,500 RPM. It shifts back and forth between 5th and 6th gear frequently.

I often travel without using the cruise control, have fewer shifts and get better gas mileage.

The learning phase will probably end when the transmission fails, or it reaches its end of life cycle.

The learning includes or is tuned to drive-train wear and tear adjustments. That is why you don't want to disconnect the vehicle battery without a memory save tool that saves all that data that keeps the vehicle running like new.

Toyota thinks this helps MPG?!?!?!?! what a joke! It feels like I'm dragging a trailer around with me on the HWY. I let off the gas and it feels like I'm driving with the parking brake on because it slows down so fast. It feels like I'm driving around in too low a gear all the time. It reminds me of my 70 chevy with the 4:10 rear gears.
