Like contractors haven't profited on what they've charged FEMA and the National Guard? I think it's insane that when we purchase additional manpower at work, a body that will end up getting a salary of $60K a year costs us $200K. But that's a whole 'nuther WTF rant...

You can't want to help others by bringing in supplies from "the outside" and expect to get paid back in return..

So it would be better that some guy with a truck and trailer living up in Oklahoma City to *NOT* load up with water drive down and offer it for sale for enough to cover his time and costs?

He should stay home instead of "profiting on the misfortune of others"?

If it's in his heart he should drive it down here to Houston and offer it for free.

I can't tell you how many times I've helped gut houses after floods around here. I've never charged a penny. Here in Texas we have great pride in helping each other out when struggling with disasters like these.

I was speaking in general terms rather than this particular individual. I've already said that if he had run out and bought up local stocks to resell, that's pretty scummy.

Consider from the John Stossel article MYTH: Price-Gouging Is Bad

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood announced a crackdown on gougers after Hurricane Katrina.

John Shepperson was one of the "gougers" authorities arrested. Shepperson and his family live in Kentucky. They watched news reports about Katrina and learned that people desperately needed things.

Shepperson thought he could help and make some money, too, so he bought 19 generators. He and his family then rented a U-Haul and drove 600 miles to an area of Mississippi that was left without power in the wake of the hurricane.

He offered to sell his generators for twice what he had paid for them, and people were eager to buy. Police confiscated his generators, though, and Shepperson was jailed for four days for price-gouging. His generators are still in police custody.

Who exactly was helped by that?

What makes for interesting spectator sport is when FEMA confiscates it and redistributes it.

I understand your point in that it's helping people. But when it says "..and make some money too" Their intentions are beyond charitable and wanting to help. Of course people were eager to buy, they had no other choice. It's like internet in Alaska, you either pay a shit load for mediocre speed with a data cap or you don't get internet.

With this specific person selling water, he isn't charging more for his time and money spent on the water and fuel, he's deliberately taking advantage.

That is a shit load of water.. and more to come :(
    Different morals apparently.

If I could help in that type of situation I would, but I wouldn't in the slightest bit expect to be paid back the cost and time spent, and then some

Yes, it's wrong. If you take the time, have the money to purchase, and have the incentive in your heart to do this, you're scum if you follow through on it. It's natural to be selfish, but it's a choice when it's followed through on. You can stay in your own damn community and be scum, or, you can risk being proven scum when caught on camera taking advantage of a disaster. The people he's gouging lost potentially lost everything in their lives. They shouldn't be thankful that some asshole had selfish foresight and is overcharging them for what provides LIFE.

What wouldn't make this guy scum, is selling at a modest profit, seeing as entire cases of water when bought at big box are drastically less expensive than by-the-bottle from a cooler. If he sold them at a by-the-bottle price, even by the case at what he bought he them for, he'd still make out pretty well.
