I've always spoiled my vehicles, I turn the a/c off when waiting at lights & don't put it on until coasting. Saves gas & easier on the engine, darn hot though.

You continuously call the auto tranny a piece of shit but its one of the smartest smoothest automatic transmissions i have ever driven. if you dont like auto's thats fine but to call it a piece of shit constantly is like your blanket statement about all cops sucking ass. its ignorant. i tow a boat with mine and it rarely searches for gears and i have no issues with my cruise control. not to mention my auto is faster than your manual and gets better mileage. a piece of shit? i dont think so

yeah, i think they fixed the cruise issue. i keep hearing about it but mine has never done anything like what people keep complaining about. mine rarely downshifts and when it does it is smooth and never violent. occasionally on a long uphill grade it will creep 4 or 5 mph over what i set it at, but it never does it fast. it just slowly keeps accelerating and then it slows back down. i use my cruise all the time and love it

    X2!
And, to mention, the auto can handle more power than the manual. The auto has been around for a while, as it was used in the 4Runner behind the 4.7 V8. :)

LOL, it's a matter of differing opinions. IMO the auto sucks ass.

BTW the smoothest and fastest shifting auto I have driven is the DSG from VW/Audi. People may argue that it's technically not an auto, but it doesn't have a clutch pedal so it's an auto in my book.

OK.... had my '96 for 258,000 miles, 6 cyl, 5 speed & decided if I could ever afford a new one it had to be a manual.. The frame buyback happens & now I'm in my new '08, v6, 6 sp.. never even considered the auto..... 500 miles later when I hear a "crunch" every time I shift from 2nd to 3rd in my new truck I'm read to "run to the dealer".... GIVE IT SOME TIME !! now at 5000 miles it shifting smooooth... probably a bit of me geting used to it AND a bit of break in time...... all of the prior post are right on on this one are RIGHT ON!!... "wrist shifts" etc, all work!!! GIVE IT SOME TIME!!!

I hate to admit that I agree with ND on this one. I have owned them both and the Auto IMHO is 100 times better.

its all in personal preference. i dont have a prob. driving an auto but i just like having the control of my stick. i put it where i want it when i want it there. i believe theres less maintence and less to go wrong with a stick. i think that they are a lot stouter transmission on the low side. but either way you can argue either trans. to the ground. lol

I still don't understand why the manual gets worse mileage than the auto. My stealer told me the stick has the same top gear as the auto. I think 6th gear turns about 2300 at 65mph. What does the auto run at? Does anybody know the real reason the manual gets worse mileage? Like I said, my stealer tells me its not a gear thing. My highway mileage is always 18-19 mpg, and that's with K&N and 2nd filter gone. Of course, I could give a crap if gas was like, well, cheaper. Just wondering cause the general rule was always that sticks got better mileage with a mild touch. Now this is different, so add the mileage BS to my list. Thanks for the responses - awesome forum.

^^^^Well I think one of the reasons is that the manual's first gear is lower then the auto.

Auto has a smaller OD gear (5th) than the manual's 6th. Dealer lied. Look up the gear ratios. :D

Unless you drive around in 1st all the time, that would have nothing to do with it. Hell, I hardly ever use 1st in mine.

.85 6th stick vs .72 5th auto. As said, 1st gear very low on the stick. Both have 3.73 rear. Auto turns 200-300 rpm less at hwy speeds.

My obs, I have a stick, friends & neighbors w/ autos

65+ mph Interstate and stop and go - unloaded, auto better mpg
65+ mph Interstate and stop and go - trailer/heavy load, depends on driver.
Driving 30-60 mph - depends on driver. That's my basically my commute and havent had a tank below 20 mpg since May.

Not sure but if the auto has a lock-up converter that would also be why. Maybe someone can verify this.

your dealer either lied or is an idiot. the gearing is much different and is the main reason for the mileage difference. i can cruise at 70mph with the rpm's sitting right at 2k. they are under 2k at 65mph

When rolling backwards why 2nd? Use 1st. 2nd is for when you are already moving forward as I am sure you know, but just use first, my Taco is an auto but I am sure you can just rev match 1-3 and skip 2nd if you dont want to shift an extra gear in that situation.

On pavement, I start in 2nd, unless up grade. The only time I use 1st is when I mistake it for reverse and hit the car parked in front of me. Yeah, I'm a dumbass, but if I wanted the FJ cruiser tranny I would have bought that toy. If 6th works good for towing, wtf is 5th for? My mistake for not doing my homework on this one. I shoulda got the auto - better fit for an old man like me. But you know, if I got the auto, I'd miss the stick, and bitch about that. Oh well, pissing and moaning makes me feel better, and this is a great place to do it!

Using 6th for towing is really only if you have a light load and/or a flat section or down grade. For even slight up grades or heavier loads you'll be glad for 5th. Not as bad, mpg wise, as dropping to 4th.

It does have a lockup converter. Its actually a variable lock up design, meaning it can be fully locked, unlocked, or partially locked. :)
