2k is about what I am expecting to pay on parts for a complete system and I will be doing all the install myself. Don't be afraid to do it. I think there are a few of is on here that have experience and love to share knowledge. And it's way more gratifying to do it yourself, and you get better stuff.

Finally figured out where the problem is with my stereo that's causing the drivers side door speaker to cut out. It's behind the dash. Absolutely certain that the expensive install that I paid for at "Custom Sounds" is botched and that connection is held together with hopes and dreams. Makes me look forward to the iPad mini in the dash setup even more.

I'm sure I could get in myself, with some help from here and the internet. I just don't think it would be nearly as well done as if I took it to a reputable shop.

Also It's the tuning and getting it sounding great/sound setup is what I'd want to be professionally done. You can put the exact same system in, and it's going to be a major difference in sound between a chain Audio store, and a reputable custom shop, due to the tuning.

I'll probably be checking out The Car Audio shop, and JML Audio.

What kind of speakers/components are you planning on? I'm not really sure yet, but I'm leaning high-end. Dynaudio or Hertz etc.

That's a bummer. How much did you pay for installation, if you don't mind me asking?

About a grand-ish. I've come to expect that it was going to be back there as we've found some interesting choices made by their guy on the alarm side as well.

As far as looks go, they are using the same install kit from crutchfield as you would.
Tuning is not possible unless you plan on installing an audio processor/eq. That will increase cost significantly. A good head unit with a built in eq will get you really far. With the sounds stage of these trucks, which is terrible for audiophile quality, you will be throwing money into the wind. Don't forget to gut the cab and dynomat so you can hear the benefits of the processor.

Honestly, a good head unit, door speakers as much as you can afford, a really good 5 channel amp, and a sub box with a high quality 10" sub will be awesome. You can do the 13" shallow JL sub if you need more rattle and not compromise behind the seat space.

I'm a big fan of the Kenwood Excelon head units. Great value and lots of options.

    Yeah.
Still running stock on this truck, but on my '09 with the flaky radio I swapped everything out and had a good system for pretty cheap, got everything from Crutchfield. They provide all the wiring and speaker adapters you need and good instructions -- anyone with a little patience should be able to do it. Running amp/sub wires takes a bit more, though.

I went with a 4 channel amp (basically 2 2-channel amps) and used one side for the front speakers and bridged the other side for a sub. Ran the rear speakers off the head unit. Mounted the amp in the spot behind the passenger-side rear seat and built a box for an 8-inch Punch sub that fit behind the driver-side rear seat. Below is the design, it has the proper internal volume for a sealed unit (do NOT port it). You do have to cut out the child seat attachment loop on that side. I just used MDF and covered it with I think a cut-up door mat I found at Lowe's. I am pretty sure I was under a grand (I shop their scratch-n-dent/open box store first) for everything, including amp/sub wiring.

Are you married? I pick and choose my battles. I want to buy a DSLR this black Friday so I'm gonna let this go until the next sale in hopes she'll let me buy the camera.
