Icon coilover leaking.

I have about 100,000 miles on my ICONS...which are actually Donahoe or whatever from back in the day......never been serviced...maybe I am just lucky..

Have you at least replaced the shock oil in those 100k miles???

 

Id think you will be fine with the 600lb springs.

 

If you are running a plate front bumper and winch...then I would go 650. If not, then 600 is perfect with kings. Kings are progressive so they will be more plush as slower speeds and stiffen under more speed, Icon is digressive which is the exact opposite.

Not lucky, just negligent. They are toast and will probably cost you double a regular rebuild to replace worn out parts from letting them go to long.

 

That's what I was thinking when I read that. Don't Icons require rebuilds around every 15k miles if you use them offroad a majority of the time, and 30k miles if street driven? Either way those are long overdue and will probably feel much better after a rebuild.

 

Yeah they are a more frequent rebuild when used aggressively. Mine survived flipping over and wheeling another 150mi afterwards with 20k on them. Probably have them rebuilt this winter to get ready for next wheeling season.

 

Man I'm hoping that the Kings I ordered last week will last a little longer than that between rebuilds at least, partly why I went with them over Icons (also the price was much better for 1st gen Kings). Going to keep my 5100s on hand for when that time comes though.

 

They might or might not. They both use Viton seals and wipers. The rods on the Icons are supposedly harder (doesn't matter) but I think it does not matter if you wheel a lot dust and grit is going to kill seals faster, just how it works. My Icons have been good to me but I'm well aware I'll have to rebuild any coilovers I buy because I'm not easy on them and my truck is only used for wheeling.

 

Like you said man, debris and dirt will find its way sooner or later and slowly burn things up. If the shock were the break completely, well that is a whole another issue.

 

Cool thanks for the info guys. Going to force myself to do the install myself so I know how to swap the 5100s back in when the time comes. The joys of having your wheeler be your DD as well lol.

 

40K for all brands of shocks that are DD and weekend warriors. I recommend to check nitrogen and check/replace the bearings yearly.

All brands are mainly BUNA seals. Kings can be upgraded to Viton but not worth the extra cost when the shocks never get hot enough to melt the Buna.

I'll just buy new ones....I bought them cheap from Adrian that worked at ICON years ago....not sure if he still does. I honestly can't tell a difference in the ride ....however I only drive 2 miles round trip a day to work. I need new leaf pack and shit so I'll just redo everything when the time comes

 

Take me 15mins a side to swap my coils, you can do it faster if you have a friend to stand on the hub.

 

You're 100% correct, I forgot the Viton was a special case for my FOAs. On our trucks there really isn't a reason for anything other than BUNA N anyway, unless you go full short course haha
