Sounds good. I wouldn't mind getting a feel for the area prior to the San G trip. Do you need to reserve anything in order to camp on the beach?

Technically your not allowed to camp on the beach, but you are allowed to fish all night, set up a tent and what not and stay. You can also sleep in the truck on the side of the road by the lake. Or yellow post it.

I'll play it by ear. Being Labor Day weekend I'm sure most of the yellow post spots will be taken. May just mak a day trip if I go.

:facepalm:It's probably going to be nuts up there. Definitely a day trip then. I do not want to try to come off that mountain in holiday traffic. Or try coming home. Although my kid has a 4 day weekend I think.

Just gas up, pack some gear and hit the road. I dont have a campsite reserved or any formal itinerary. Just headed up Thursday before the sun comes up and see what happens. Itll be a busy weekend but Mammoth usually still has plenty of room even on holidays if you get there early enough. Sometimes adventures are the best without a plan

Full disclosure though i have friends headed up as well with i think 7 campsites already reserved so worst worst case ill squeeze in somewhere with them even though they are technically full sites already. So i do have an emergency backup plan lol. But i dont anticipate any issue finding a place to stay. Its also not my first time there so im pretty familiar with the area

If you have 4x4 you can make it all the way to Laurel Lakes. Its absolutely beautiful up there!! Probably pretty darn cold at night but totally worth it. Sketchy ride up though. I made it in 2wd all the way up to about 1/8th of a mile to the lake where it turns into tight switchbacks. Wouldn't attempt that without 4wd though you wont make it back out and no room for a recovery either. You have to make it all the way though to have a place for your vehicle.

I was thinking to check out Laurel but thought it could be crowded on a holiday weekend. I like to get away from the people

This is true. Especially if your not headed up until saturday itll be full by then. Last year we stayed at Lake Mary but it was also really crowded and we found a walk up camp site. Gonna be tough on a Saturday but if you stay around Bishop you should be fine. Ill be there Thursday through Tuesday and plan a day trip over the 120 to Yosemite. Im sure its gonna be massive amounts of people there and surely no place to sleep so itll just be an early morning and late night back to camp. See you up there, and good luck with the plan (or lack of haha)

Ha that's what I was thinking. I've been trying to find some fishing reports for the creeks and lakes in coyotes flats. I've never been on that trail but have heard it's one you have to do

I was just up at coyote flats and funnel lake/rock bottom lake this past weekend. Camped one night on the trail to coyote flats because i arrived around midnight. second night camped at funnel lake. I sadly did not catch any fish at either lake.
