Personally i would like 285/75's but i think it would be smarter to save the cash for now. Unless i mean its only like 65 bucks more for 33's and the 33's are 54 pounds compared to the E rated 265/75's which weigh 48 pounds each. Think i would even notice a 24 pound total increase in tire weight through throttle response?

You got the right idea. I think once it comes time to pull the trigger you will do the purchase that best suits your current situation

*cracks fingers* Alright here we go. All 17" tire sizes listed below are the same size as what you're thinking, just the 17" equivalent.

So I'm a pretty good candidate for this, since I have ran 265/70r17 General Grabber AT2s on a stock height Tacoma and lifted tacoma. I then ran some 285/75r16s on that same Tacoma. I ALSO have ran 255/80r17 both stock height and lifted on my current, second tacoma.

Short answer: Get the 265/75r16 in a Standard Load if they make that in the 16" version. I know they do in the 17" version because that's what I ran on my last tacoma.

Long answer: For your needs, you want something that's not ridiculously heavy as that will kill your MPG on your commute and will also ride harsher in a load D/E. The answer? Something in standard load. I ran 265/70r17 General Grabber AT2's in standard load and even wheeled with them, and they did great. Didn't notice a loss in MPG and didn't notice any firmer ride. Our trucks come with P rated tires from the factory, so anything our truck can handle, SL tires can handle as well.

Still want more meat? Check out 255/85r16. It's taller than the 285/75r16, but a little over an inch narrower. A skinnier tire also leads to less rolling resistance, therefore not hurting MPG as much and will also barely rub at all (if you're on stock wheels). I'm running 255/80r17 Cooper ST Maxx and still get around 15-16 MPG on the highway. Your tire options are limited in that, but the Maxx are a fantastic tire that'll handle anything you can throw at it, perform well on the street, and are relatively quiet for what they are. I can't hear mine at all with the radio on low.

If you're dead set on 285s, you need to consider some things. For one, you can't run them on stock wheels. There isn't enough backspacing, so your tire will rub the UCA. The solution to this is to run wheel spacers (~$200 for a set) or get aftermarket wheels. By pushing the tire out farther away from the UCA, you will then rub on other various parts of your truck that will either need to be cut off or beat out of the way with a hammer. This is doable and not too hard with the right tools, but it's not as easy as slapping on some tires and going.

    Alright onto the pics.

Here's my old truck with a ~2.5" lift and 265/70r17 General Grabber AT2s

Dick cepek extreme country, but they're a straight up mud tire, so not great for commuting at all. BF Goodrich KM2s (also a mud tire) are also in that size. I believe the ST Maxx are the most tame available.

Good luck! Unfortunately Discount Tire doesn't carry any 255/85r16 tires. Only 255/80r17 which is the same size, just a 17" rim. Definitely sucks.

A huge deciding factor for me when buying the General Grabber AT2s was the price. I got them for $150 shipped, which just couldn't be beat. Discounttiredirect is straight from the warehouse with free shipping and no tax, so make sure to buy from there. They currently have them for $179 shipped.

    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/general-grabber-at2/p/32402

EDIT: Just noticed they're load E. Looks like they're not offered in standard load, which blows.

Here's a good compromise. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac in a Load C at $185 a piece, and look aggressive as hell.

I know right, its the width of the tire that kills a taco. Thats why i wanted 255/85/16's but im waiting on those. Placed my order last night for 265/75/16 C load duratracs and got a 100$ visa rebate card coming to me by mail from them. Total spent is $729 if you subtract the rebate. Thats with 3 year road hazard since im gonna be doing a shit ton of driving through construction zone highways.
