I think proximity to places where things are being developed and luck makes a big difference.

You still need the luck... find some bald heads, Buddha statues, 4 leaf clovers and rabbits feet.

It's not about his truck -- it's about the vendor's products. If they're giving something away, they expect to see a return on the investment in multiples. It's business, and showing how they'd profit by helping you is the only way to make it work.

I was referring to getting followers, not test products

I've tested a few products over the years

Almost always it was related to social media following and/or actually KNOWING the person creating the project (or coming up with the idea myself and pitching it to a company)

Like @mjp2 said, the company will want a return for the investment

Sure they could have you test product x, but if you never use product x except once a year...are you really a good subject for testing it? or would someone else who will use it 100 times a year be a better choice?

Take a look at this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/traction-board-review-tred-maxtrax-traction-jack-maxsa.470774/ that is the kind of things companies are looking for when they send out gear to test. Thorough testing of the product, lots of pictures and videos of the product in use, and a well written, easy to read summary will get people to view your content. Once you have eyeballs, continue providing content.

@Mademan925 paid for all the traction boards he tested and I would bet many of the people posting similar things pay for the products in full out of their own pocket. But then when a company has something new they want to promote they know what sort of coverage they can expect, not 'I got this thing, it's neat, you should buy one #hashtag'.

    enough to go over stuff

I bought all the boards to stay unbiased. There are companies that give products to people to test out. Which is cool. I personally have received tires, bedslide, warn winch, deadman, tepui bags, gerber gear. I don't mind promoting quiality products I'd buy anyway. I won't promote garbage just to be famous. But from what I have found. Don't go reaching out to companies. That doesn't work. They need to reach out to you. Build a following and they will come. #igot17k
