Through the pass and out into North Rim!

You see the little orange rocks right above Timmy's truck in the middle of the picture? Little did we know but that would be the last camp until the canyons in the background... it was a loooong and bumpy evening trying to go as fast as our chattering teeth and rattling trucks would allow to get to some sort of camp.

We enjoyed the ride, though, at least in the beginning. It was so weird to see Joshua Trees and Juniper trees growing alongside each other

Finally, about 30 minutes after dark we found a cleared camping area off of the road. It was such a welcome treat because we were heading up into the steep canyons where we didn't expect to find anything for miles, so we were very relieved!

The next morning revealed the views:

The road through Hidden Canyon gradually improved until we were finally getting into hi-range 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears, it was so amazing!

We got to a veritable unpaved highway and turned south towards Kelly and Twin points, finally covering some distance quickly without shaking every bolt loose.

That is, until we got to the road to Kelly Point... Instant slow-down. We pushed through the first handful of miles, hoping we would at some point get back to a smoother road. At some point we decided we had come too far to skip out on the overlook so we gritted our teeth against the cobbles and made the long push down to the point.

And holy crap was it amazing!

    We were so excited!

TONS of blooming plants around, too, which was epic because everything in San Diego had dried up for the most part, so we got our second spring bloom experience out here.

But...we had other points to check out in the next couple days so we made the long bumpy way back up towards Twin Point. In hindsight, we probably could've made camp there that night, or we should've done Twin point first, but who knows. I doubt we'll ever head back to Kelly Point because that approach road sucked so bad.

We made camp up near the junction of the approaches for Kelly and Twin points, in a nice big stand of trees.

[IMG]IMG_8043_edit_small by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

The next morning we headed down to Twin point.

[IMG]IMG_8044_edit_small by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We were feeling antsy from sitting in the trucks for so long so we made a quick stop for a walk out to a potential view. It wasn't that spectacular, but a neat little canyon. What was more impressive was all of the stuff on the way.

Lightning strike, I think? We saw a number of these around.

[IMG]IMG_8045_edit_small by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

    Lots of blooming plants everywhere.

After the short little 1/2 mile walk we continued on our way.

From there we headed north then east to Bar 10 Ranch. I had called ahead a few days before and confirmed that they had enough gas for us to fuel up without carrying 10 extra gallons each and let them know that we would be stopping, so that was our one semi-scheduled stop. Such a crazy place, and so different from what we are used to, especially the last few days out in north rim. We hadn't seen more than a couple of people until Bar 10, where suddenly there were dozens in the middle of the back country!

We were originally going to keep our gas purchase small, not knowing how much they had available, but they had a freaking 13,000 gallon tank so we got 10 gallons each and didn't have to worry about it for the rest of North Rim. We paid our $5/gallon for much-needed backcountry gas and were on our way!

The plan for the night was to camp at Whitmore Point Overlook, and we were not disappointed!

This was the valley with Bar 10 in the distance. Quite the beautiful little area for a rafting stop!

[IMG]IMG_8182_edit_small by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

From there we headed north to the little ghost town of Mt Trumbull. We stopped for a brief bathroom break and happened to run into some of the people that abandoned the town decades ago that were back for a visit. Some crazy stories!

The view over Mt Trumbull on the way east to Tuweep:

[IMG]IMG_8183_edit_small by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

We stopped at a petroglyph site in this little gorge that I forget the name of.

Pretty cool little hike! And I found a gremlin in my photo... @at_olw

And then we headed north and out of AZ!

We wanted to get some climbing in in SW UT but weren't entirely sure where to go, so we spent that evening and really most of the next day bumbling around trying to figure it out, but it ended up working out.

Camp that night ended up being in the Smithsonian Butte area outside of Zion. Always a pleasure out there.

    This cactus found something right!

The next day we stopped in St George for showers and some food supplies that we had run out of and then headed into Snow Canyon State Park, anticipating some climbing there. Unfortunately I messed up in finding a place with a good mix of climbing instead of just multi-pitch 5.10's... I wanted to get on a wall so bad! So we just spent some time cruising around the park and then went to somewhere with some beginner stuff that ended up being perfect for figuring out our climbing abilities.

Then we headed up to Prophesy Wall area to camp for climbing the next day before Dani and I had to head home for work the day after.

Our camp was fairly unexciting, but we had one tree that blocked the wind from rustling and flapping Timmy's tent all night. He loves that tent in the wind...

And then we climbed some sweet single-pitches and we split ways! Timmy headed back into Zion for his extra couple of days and did Observation Point. I'm extremely jealous... Next time!

I wish we had planned the end of the trip a bit better because that was kinda ridiculous, but we'll do better in the future.

Here's to the next trip, @at_olw!

Fantastic photos as always! It's always interesting to see how others experience the same environments. Some beautiful scenery out that way; that's for sure. Can't wait until the next trip
