My buddy told me the Tacos are notorious for massive frame rust...Mine's an 09..... I'm going to put a good oil undercoating and drill oiling panel holes soon.

Is the rusting still a problem???????

Depends on who you ask. Mine doesn't haven't any issues.
There are a few folks who have had rust show up on chrome body parts very early (inside 6 months) and who aren't happy with the rust showing on the frame.

The older trucks have issues with the frames rusting straight thru...

I noticed a little frame rust on my 09.....going to give it a good thick oil undercoat every 6 months to be safe.

Surface Rust and Frame rust really are different. I'm not a huge fan of oil undercoats- I like using a real sealant better...but whatever works for you man!!

I sold my '98 back to Toyota on the rust-thru buyback and got a brandy-new 2008. Yesterday, I was under there changing the oil and putting in an add-a-leaf and noticed a quite a few rust spots. Mostly around welds and hardware. I sprayed a bunch of LPS#3 around and I'll definitely be getting undercoating every year or so from now on. Getting that buyback was almost like winning the lottery - can't count on that kind of luck twice! My '98 was hammered and they gave my almost $11,000 for it and a grand off a new one. Put the frame rust issue aside, the thing still wasn't worth $3,000. Of course I live in Upstate NY and they use a ton of salt all winter here.

i just bought a 2010 about a month ago, i asked about the rust issues ive heard about and they told me that for the most part the issue has been resolved except for areas that use a lot of salt on the roads, plus they have a lifetime corrosion waranty now, not sure when they started that though...

    NOPE!

As for the OP, it will depend on who you ask - the guys who experience winter are going to say its still a problem, the guys in the south are going to say it isn't.

As for the rust warranty, read the fine print. Its a "perforation rust" warranty. Anyone know what a perforation is? That's right - a HOLE. There is a 5 year perforation rust warranty on all Toyotas, body panels only.

Basically if your body panel (fender) rusts enough to cause a hole within 5 years of the purchase date, Toyota will FIX it.

Don't believe me? Here you go...

    Mine too :(
To do it all over again, I would definitely get the frame professionally treated. I did not on my 2006.

Mine looked like this in the fall after 2 winters in Vermont. This is after a weekly DIY power washes.

My friend owns a rather large tree service company & swears by the bar/chain oil /wax mix undercoat on all his trucks. He is going to brush my truck & treat it this Spring for me.

I live in RI where they use a lot of road salt and my 05 Tacoma is showing only minor surface rust. Here's what i do; every spring i get under my truck and wire brush/paint all rusted areas with a special "Rust Encapsulating" paint made by eastwood. Oil will wear off fast and offers little protection, do it right or you will end up with an unsafe frame in 10 years!!

My 2006's frame still looks brand-new and it's been driven over quite a few salted passes. I've never washed it either -- I just let the puddles do that. I wonder if some runs of frames have better metal or paint coating than others?

No rust except where I sat the frame on a ginormous boulder. . . grinded the rust off and spray painted it.

    its all good now.

I drove my truck home with 3 miles on it and had a can of Chassis Saver waiting. Coated the entire frame and a few other things. I also coated the hitch I added later on. I hit this stuff with a hammer and it didn't chip. Also doesn't chip where I lift the truck either. One harsh winter down with no washes and no surface rust. :)

I have owned my Tacoma for 11 months now. I live in an arid climate in southern Califronia. My experience is that Dana corp who made the frame under contract from Toytoa does not use quality paint on the frame when made at the factory. This is Toyota's fault. The paint is thin and weak.

There are many pictures in the forum with frames with rust issues. Some are downright hideous. All the Tacoma owners who live in snow and where they salt the roads have it the worst.

Just look at virtually any picture of U bolts on the rear axle, you will see lots of rust.

Also, Fortech was right on. The frame in our truck is not covered by warranty.

Warrantee for rust through is 5 years now (used to be 7 years) but the fine print states that rust due to SALT is not covered. I don't get it. Older Tundra's are being warranteed for frame rust out to 12 (15?) years, but it seems there is no warranty whatsoever on a new Taco.
