Someone must have been creeping around my neighbourhood last night. This morning my trucks gas tank and cap were off. How much bad do you think could come of this if any at all?

What do you mean by gas tank? Like the door was open and the lid was off?

I'd be more concerned that someone maybe put something in your tank, with the gas cap being off and all.

That's my guess too. 5 nights ago the old lady's car was broken into too .. hmmm very frustrating. Should I contact insurance or my dealership?

Do you smell anything or notice anything around your gas tank, where you put the cap on? I've always heard the whole "sugar in the tank", thing. If they put sugar in your tank, I don't think it causes permanent damage, it just clogs parts of the fuel system (filters, injectors etc) and you'd have to get it cleaned out.

If they put bleach in your tank, and it's gets ran through the system, It may be FUBAR, and you might have to replace a lot of stuff.

Or maybe someone just took your cap off.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
id call your insurance, and explain what happened. Personally, I would have the truck towed and tank emptied without starting it.

Not much you can do, inspect it, take photos, maybe file a police report or at least prepare/be ready to file one. Fire it up and let's see how she runs. If it stumbles and misfires, no worries Toyota told me this is normal for the vehicle.

Chances are they tried to take the gas, not put anything in, but you never know.

Heard it's very hard to siphon gas from the newer tacomas.
Hopefully nothing was put in there. Good luck OP

I would check around the gas filler area for residues there probably would be some if sugar or sand were poured in, although I wouldn't hesitate to try and start the engine because the 3.5l v6 is such a good and strong power plant it probably wouldn't even notice that there was sugar or sand in there. whereas a Chevy(especially the 6.2l engine) or Ford usually will break down at just the sight of sand.

I thought there was a screen barrier in the fill tubes that wont allow debris to enter or siphons

@AFMurse2014 can tell you all about this :)

OP, check for debris around the filler and other than that be thankful they gave up and didn't drill the tank to drain it. If they poured something in there, I doubt they took the time to make it nice and neat.
