I know some here feel a cai is worthless. My garage owner/mechanic friend disagrees. He recommends the S & B cai made for the Tacoma. He says you will definitely hear and feel the improved performance. Any one know about S & B products?

Maybe on a high performance vehicle and even on my 5.0 mustang, you had to be in the 4000-5000 rpm range to even notice it and are you in that range regularly? And it was about 10-12 hp for the mustang, you may get 4 hp and they already have a CAI on them, save your money for something else..

    Hi kgilly,

The 3rd gen already has a Cold Air intake? That's just factually wrong. I recently installed a K&N CAI and when I took off was a pile of restricted plastic that was extremely restrictive. My gains have been around 18HP. Yuuuuuge difference is HP and torque. The biggest advantage for me is the increased mileage. I'm averaging 3MPG increase.

Wow, I'm surprised you only gained 18hp with that warm air intake.

Does he want to charge you to put it in?

Honestly, if you're into the sound, it WILL sound "better"*, but I doubt you will trully feel anything different other than a minimal change in throttle response and some increased intake at high rpms. The fact is, I just don't think these engines need much fuel (edit: and air obviously) on the low end of the powerband.

*some people think intakes sound ricey.

I don't think you are likely to see any real world gains. This truck has been out over a year and I still wonder why I haven't seen the supposed gains from a cold air intake on a real objective dyno run with multiple pulls. Maybe there is a reason for that.

I would rather spend my money on mods that really made me appreciate the truck more. A CAI isn't that far from buying the OV Tune. Might get you closer to suspension..... maybe a cap? Lots of other mods that would be better than 2hp.

I went with aFe on mine. If nothing else, the sound is awesome! Doesn't sound ricey at all, sounds throaty. Plus with mine I did notice a performance difference which the doubters her call your butt dyno.

Throttle response can be felt... but HP gains?!
I think KN&N marketing may have had something to do with this!

Does this set up still pull the air through the wheel well area?

Since I took this picture I added the front scoop. Sounds great! I rapped the throttle next to a Mustang this morning and he responded in kind!

Yes, it uses the same hole in the wheel well, but I have since added the front scoop which draws air from the grille.
