Well I'm glad I decided to go ahead and rebuild my struts while I have them off. They may not have been leaking externally but when I drained the nitrogen out of the first one I got a nice cloud of oil with it. Then when I went to remove the retainer clip for the piston I had to crank down a ratchet strap pretty damn tight to squeeze it down enough to get the clip out, then when I released the strap it had enough pressure built up on the wet side that it sprayed some nice foamy oil out all around.

The fact that it held pressure tells me that the o-ring was probably still in decent shape inside but I'm not sure how I got oil past it one way into the dry side and nitrogen past into the wet side. Maybe the o-ring was worn just enough that in heavy compression it leaked? I've only taken the 1 apart so far but I will see what happens with the drivers side when I get back to it after work tonight.

It's not too uncommon for some oil to come out of the nitrogen charge port, really. Doesn't say much to the condition of the shock itself. I thought the same thing (mostly because the guy that rebuilt them told me that) but when I had a guy that wasn't an idiot rebuild them I told him what I had "learned" and he said he sees it all the time even on shocks he has just rebuilt and is fine tuning the valving.

Idk how it works, but I bet you had/have some life left in those bad boys if they weren't leaking.

    That's cool!

This book I have though is a piece of crap. it proudly proclaims that the Hummer is the king of the off-road. You guys can have it, or I'll recycle it.

Yeah, I'm sure they weren't ready to fail imminently but with 40k on them I figured it was worth it to clean them up and replace the guts while I had the coils off already. The other strut had a little bit of oil above the IFP but no pressure in the oil.

Since we are on the topic of books. 1962, everything from beaver, to moose, to shellfish, to wild plants. Grandma was cool for sending me this. I just found a letter from her in it and her own halibut recipe.

Hey boys, I need a 20-ish gun safe that doesnt need to be fireproof, isnt complete garbage and doesnt cost more than me $5-600. I only need it to keep the pieces of shit that break into the houses in our neighborhood from just grabbing the damn things and running out the door.
