i wonder if this is some sort of weird harmonic resonance that's occurring at that speed etc

I heard it at 20mph today.

Not nearly as loud but same frequency for sure.

I'm pretty sure it's making the noise all the time but it's honey spot is 55mph ish.

    Super lame.

Yeah at the end before I sold it I started hearing mine all the way up to 80, about the fastest I drive. Definitely wasn't as loud as that 55-65 mph zone, but it was there. Seemed to very slowly appear over the 14k miles I had the new diff.

So yeah, it does seem to get a little worse, albeit very slowly.

My second diff was loud from day 1. Way louder than my first diff.

I've only had this new diff maybe 4000 miles and it has definitely become even worse in those miles. I got a lemon diff.

Rest of the truck has been great but this howl is a pretty big bummer. I just can't love this truck with it howling at me every time I drive it

This may have already been ask, but has anyone had somebody else drive while they ride in the bed and see how loud it is from the outside?

Oof at 55mph that's asking for a ticket.

    Good question though.

The question of riding in the bed was asked at work one day and they said it was legal.

If the cop has a taco, he'll understand. Seriously though, might be worth a try. Just find a straight backroad somewhere.

Another trip to the dealer and "ZERO" help from any one of them. 5 different dealers and they all said it's normal!

Bummer. Are you going to leave it so they can do a diagnosis?

My coworker let me drive his 2016 sr5 DCSB. Doesn't howl. My neighbors 2016 doesn't howl. Every time i see a 3rd gen tacoma owner I approach them and ask how they like their truck and if it makes that howling noise 50-60 mph. Everybody tells me their truck doesn't make that noise.
Pisses me off. Toyota says it's normal.

    It might actually be normal.

    But its not acceptable.

What Toyota doesn't seem to understand is that calling something "normal" doesn't means its okay, safe, etc. Normal literally just means: "conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected." What they are saying when they describe this awful howling rear differential as "normal" is that this is the standard for the truck. This is usual and expected for 3rd gen Tacomas. It means they dont give a f*ck about quality. That's what they are saying when they call it normal.

The worst part is, they say "its normal" as if that absolves them from any responsibility or that it makes it all okay. Some other things that have been normal for Toyota: rusty frames on 1st and 2nd gen trucks, brakes that failed, floor mats getting wedged on accelerators causing unintended acceleration. All of those things were typical, usual, and expected of Toyota..normal. A normal characteristic of Ford Pintos is that they burst into flames when rear-ended. A normal characteristic of my dog is that he loses his shit at the neighbors dog. NONE OF THOSE THINGS ARE ACCEPTABLE regardless of whether or not they are "normal".

I said sure . I can drop off Monday.. he said we have no open appointments Monday-. Then he said d/o Friday but Monday's a holiday , it might be middle next week. I call bs. I'll be there on Friday with bells on! He then said it may be ready Friday night or it could be here a week or 2 depending on if they need to order parts. This isn't the only Tacoma that does this. Why haven't they fixed it. $40k for a truck might not be a big deal but my first truck in 1989 brand new off the showroom floor was $6,800 out the door. Toyota quality sucks now!

Yep.. I was on vacation in Nevada stopped at a dealer in Reno...and they did the recall check. Never left the lot and said"it's good to go". I told the service tech I'm driving 4,800 miles in 2 weeks with my family. Not even a test drive. If this craps out because that part failed or god forbid my family gets injured I'm suing their balls off. I made it back and now I just flipped 15,000 miles in 5 months.

I'm assuming this carries more weight than the "some guy at the dealership" stories we've heard in the past. Though the "monthly" update isn't very inspiring. It suggests they don't think this is happening soon.

Yeah didn't like that either. Months...

This person did their due diligence though and I believe them that Toyota is working on it. It's going to be a TSB or something along those lines.

Whelp... back in the shop. They are putting the chassis ears on it.

FWIW both the Tech's I have worked with so far at Wilsonville Toyota in Oregon have been very helpful.

    We'll see what they say.

In the meantime, I'm rockin this bad boy.
