It's not weight that gets people in trouble towing normally. It's the size and surface area of the trailer that dictate how easily you are pushed around. In fact, a lighter trailer can be significantly less stable than a heavier trailer because of its susceptibility to being pushed around in a cross wind. Also having pin weight is not a bad thing...too much is far better than too little. A rear heavy trailer can get you in a world of hurt so quick it'll make your head spin.

Quite a while ago I trailered a race car then a boat. Rule of thumb rule was don't think about towing more than 80% of maximum tow weight. That was with a long 2500 dodge. Was told max tow weights were for level roads and no winds. Probably 5000lbs is a realistic limit for a Taco?

I would wager that the majority of non-professional towing accidents are down to people trying to drive too freakin' fast, with 2nd place going to bad weight distribution on the trailer.

We get far more than our fair share of neophyte and just plain jerk "snowbird" travel trailer haulers down here--it is scary watching these idiots zooming along I-95 at 70-75, just on this side of "losing it",and completely oblivious to that fact...

    Not quite, nice try again.

"Toyota was the first to begin certifying vehicles to the new standard beginning in the 2011 model year. It went all-in, too. Every model in the Toyota lineup has been rated according to J2807 since then."

"The maximum-claimed towing capacity of most pickup trucks is bullshit. Those numbers are created by manufacturers and vetted by no one. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) wants to change that, with a standard test for measuring truck towing capacity called "J2807.""

So the truck is capable of towing 6500 with tow package, I can't imagine doing so though. God my truck felt so slow with just 3000 behind it, averaged 8-9 mpg:bananadead:
