My 2017 Tacoma Limited V6/auto/2wd, a November 2016 build, has passed 13k miles. For the first 2k miles it averaged 21.7 mpg, and for the last 11k+ is showing 22.5. The rear diff isn't leaking, it hasn't used any oil, nothing exciting. I open the sunroof a lot, and like opening the back window with the roof. It creates a nice airflow.

A long time friend just bought a 2017 Colorado Z71 2wd V6/auto, and we plan to go to the dragstrip together. We both have driving experience so I think he will win, but should I turn off the traction control (switch on overhead console) or use the ECT button?

Yeah, try not to break the tires loose too much with your automatic transmissions... Lol. You'll be better off leaving traction control ON with an automatic. You don't have a clutch to worry about.

Yes, the racing Tacoma's thread has been revived :burnrubber:

I don't have a lot of advice except hammer down and hold on.

Turn off the traction control. As soon as you start to spin, power is cut when TC is on.

push and hold the TC button for like 3 seconds while you're stopped. This turns it all the way off.

I'm not sure this will help or not. I believe this turns off the Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD), this might actually help as it uses the brakes to grab the spinning tire forcing power to the gripping tire.

I agree with the ECT on, and Traction Control off. Traction control cuts back power if there is slipping (don't want that). I'm betting you want eLSD on though, but there is only one way to be sure.

As if the tires will actually break loose... if your Third Gen is an Auto Trans and like most others, it is a near impossible feat to break the rear tires loose regardless of TC on or off.

Dunno, I've been a little surprised, but never actually tried to really peal out.

Has no one taken one to the dragstrip?

I'm not worried about it blowing the tires off. I'll be able to throttle down and through any spin in has.

Sounds like I need to make multiple passes with the various nannies turned on and off, to determine if it matters.

I'm guessing its just not a priority. Its a truck with a v-6 motor. It was never designed to run fast...and I'm sure, like most of the rest of the Toyota truck line, the speed limiter kicks in at around 110 mph. That's not a lot faster than some of the xway speeds during rush hour/

I don't see the point of beating on a $40K piece of equipment. Most of us need to run these trucks 10 years to make it worth the cost of buying the thing.

    Just my opinion.

So much misconception in this thread.

Clicking the button turns off TRACTION control. This also engages “Auto LSD”. This remains active until the button is pressed again, or vehicle speed exceeds like 15mph or something. It will let you spin the tires, but not yaw (steering). If it senses any yaw, you will be cut off and the ECU will intervene (as in normal mode).

Holding the button for 3 seconds disables TRACTION AND STABILITY control. This remains active until the button is pressed again. This mode is not limited to a certain vehicle speed. Auto LSD is disengaged. This is the mode where the real fun happens.

    RTFM, people.

Not that I've tried, but I don't think you can bring the revs up while holding the brake. So you're fucked for a launch. I read somewhere the Toyota have decided to get the ecu to cut the engine if you do that. Without being able to launch, you may as well give up now unless your buddy doesn't know how to drive.

    Wrong again!

You can do it IF you are holding the brake pedal first. Then throttle after. Brakestands still work!

If you throttle first, then brake, it will cut power. This is the “unintended acceleration” scenario.
