The one time I have smoked my clutch it was backing up a trailer on a hill. The reverse ratio is horrible.

One of you fancy electrical junky types needs to find a way to disable the 4WD on the fly when the knob is set to 4LO... 2LO is VERY useful.

I think it’s damn near impossible...many have tried. It goes through it’s own computer. If any one of a number of vehicle parameters is not right, it won’t complete or initiate the range shift.

Only thing I can think might work (that hasn’t been tried yet) is shifting to 4LO, and then overriding the ADD to unlock the front. Still iffy at best. Probably would trip a lot of errors.

Reverse is ridiculous. If I had to back a heavy trailer up a hill I'd be in 4lo. Unless its something crazy you arent going to bind that much

FJ or 4runner case with a twin stick. Done!

Yes, I used 4 Low but didn't help that much. The hitch on the front might be the best plan I've heard. First gear is stronger than reverse on this truck. SMH.

Wouldn't you still need hubs to accomplish 2lo?

You just have to pull the interlock pin out from between the shift rods. Doing that allows the shift rails to move independently. One for 2wd/4wd the other for high/low range.

Nope. With a FJ twin stick (out of an auto trans FJ, pretty sure the 6MT FJ was AWD/4WD) you are divorcing high/low range from 2WD/4WD. Only possible because the original pattern is a j-shift actuating two different shift rails, breaking it out into a twin stick activates each rail individually. I only know of one such t-case personally and was told that it was a massive headache to pull off. All that said, if I had the time and money I'd do it myself in a heartbeat. Reverse blows in the 6MT.

I used to back out of the driveway when I first bought the truck. Reverse was annoyingly painful going up a hill.

So to combat this, I reverse first when I get home everyday so that when I pull out of the driveway I am in first and facing into traffic. This is safer and far less of an annoyance.

If someone would put out a kit to replace the electrical actuator, I would do this!

THE 4 banger MT comes with a 4.22 reverse gear vs the 3.39 in the v6 MT. Can I use the 4.22 ?

Its equivalent to a 4.65 when you offset due to rear end ratio. I'm thinking the only way to get that is to switch to the 2.7 4cyl. Totally different transmission. I wish

You can always search Australian EBay and such for an RC61F out of a Hilux.
Better lower reverse and first gear. More usuable 5th and a high strung 6th.

Holy cow.....this seems like an option for someone who really cares about their truck 10 years from now when these things are all trashed and we are on our 5th owners

I was wondering if maybe I was just used to my truck or something like that than you posted how the 4 cylinder MT trans reverse is geared higher than the 6. I guess the 2.7 wins again! hah

I think all realistic options are going to be a lot more expensive than just dealing with it and replacing your clutch maybe 3-4 times instead of 1-2 times over the life of the truck, especially if you do it yourself.

If you are towing this boat almost every day, then I'd heavily consider upgrading to a tundra or a dodge diesel manual trans dedicated tower if you need the manual!

As others have said if it is a straight line you are fine putting it in 4wd. If you need to make turns, you'd have to probably figure out a way to put gravel in.
