Every workout is for time. That's part of crossfit.

Yeah you are doing crunches. Need to be doing full situps. They can be done without something holding your feet, I promise. Lie on your back with your arms straight to your sides, palms down. Keep hands at sides during whole move. Don't have to have feet flat on the floor but at least heals. Keep your legs straight and on the ground if that helps until you can get some bend in your knees. You find that abmat? If I can find a video i'll post it.

Didn't know the time thing. Also, I wasn't aware of crunches not being a good workout. So much for that workout! I'll give the straight leg sit-up my best shot.

No luck on the abmat, guess I'll be shopping today. Maybe while I'm out I will find something to help hold my feet. How about that door pull-up bar thing? Any experience with it? I think I saw it being used for that purpose in an advertisement. Might be a good purchase b/c then I could do some pull-ups too.

Started at a new gym today since I just got back to NJ. And off to a great start... I think I had the slowest time out of the first 2 classes, lol. Pretty cool atmosphere and good group from who I've met so far though. Anyway, workout today:

    Warmup
Deadlift. build up to 3 rep max: 295

    WOD: 13:40
    3 rounds;
    20 Box Jumps (24")
    20 pullups
    20 Wall Ball (20lb)

    Cool down:
    3x20 GHD situps

I agree, completely not necessary to have anything to hold your feet. Though the butterfly with the legs is new to me. But even without the abmat you still don't need anything to hold your feet. Found another video and so I'm going to post it anyway:

You can always do the workout again for time later.

I'm not sure I would trust that door pull up bar for doing a workout. Unless you can do 50 pullups without kipping.

Thanks for the video! That's something I have never seen.

So, I went by Target and got the pull-up bar thing. (I can't find a picture online and forgot to take one.) It also allows for sit-ups and dips. I haven't assembled it yet, but as soon as I get off work it's on my agenda. I also picked up an ab mat. Looks pretty nice, a lot better than the one I couldn't find. My buddy gave me a workout to try for tomorrow, so I will give it a shot in the morning. He modified the mile runs to suicides for me- I am a short distance runner by default.

    • suicides
    • 100 dips
    • 200 pushups
    • 300 squats

Must finish one exercise before going to the next. Suicides between every set of every exercise.

1 - What is kipping? (BTW, I can't do 50 pull-ups. Was hoping to be able to build up some reps though if I had a bar.)

2 - Thanks for all the help guys. :) I appreciate you all taking the time to put in your 2 cents. I have just always been more satisfied with doing sit-ups if I have something holding my feet. To me it feels like I can get a more quality workout in that way.

Your friend is trying to kill you. That is one of the hero workouts called Murph. That is going to take you forever to do if you are just starting. It takes conditioned athletes 40 minutes or so to do. Good luck to you.

Kipping is swinging your legs to help with pullups. Non crossfitters think it's cheating but you still get a good workout with it.

You'll be more satisfied with situps if you don't have anything holding your feet. Trust us ;)

Great... wonder what I ever did to him  I guess he thinks I am also a former Marine.

Well, if I need to I will modify it. I've only got limited time to workout before I need to crash (working 13s, driving 1.5, need to sleep at some point) Maybe I'll put a time limit on it and just get what I can done. Like, cut the reps in half, and finish as much of the 2nd half as time allows. So I don't miss any of one exercise. He was adamant about finishing one exercise before starting the next.

The dips should be pullups for the actual workout of murph with a mile run before and after the other stuff.

I'd cut that down to 50 dips, 75 pushups, 100 squats. You can still do your suicides. Unless you want to do pullups then you can do that.

Well, at the time he sent it I didn't have the pull-up bar. And I doubt seriously that I could get in 50 pull-ups if I tried all morning. My upper body strength is my biggest weakness. I'll try your numbers, and see if I can get more in afterwards.

After years of not doing jack, this stuff is kicking my ass. I'm just happy that I am stubborn and will keep doing as much as I can each time. Hopefully, those numbers will increase (and times will decrease) after I keep it up a while. I feel like a bit of a wuss so far, but at least that gives me plenty of goals to attain.

If you are willing to put in the time and work, crossfit can do wonders for you. I assure you that you will get faster and stronger as well as seeing improvements in your body as well.
