Can I tow This?

Wondering if I can tow a 7000lb mini backhoe from the rental, I'm a little worried about braking, but I'm assuming the trailer has a surge brake on it, I don't have the electronic brake control, (at least not that I know of), anybody ever hauled something this heavy woth their taco?

 

Do you have a 4.0? If so, I'd do it. My 2.7 towed my 5.0 mustang conv. With quite hefty trailer just fine. Just take it slow and pay attn.

 

Trucks rated to tow 6,500lbs, and as you said, I'd be worried about braking more than actual engine power to pull it.

 

Sure, just go slow.

 

If your truck isn't rated and equipped for that trailer they may not even let you hook it up.

 

they said I'd need at least a 3/4 ton truck to pull it. I wonder if the weight they specify is including the trailer.

 

Yes I have, I towed a 6000lb fully loaded trailer from Colorado to New Orleans with my gen1 v6. There were obviously hills and it did great. You should have no problems going from a rental store to your house.

Yeah...Knowin if the trailer is included in that weight is important. That seems like alot. Make sure you have a trailer brake controller, a WD hitch and take it slow if you try....It's your rig- Do what you want- but I wouldn't be trying it myself.

 

Does that include the trailer??

If your gonna tow it be safe and get a trailer brake controller.

 

May be his rig, but it's not his life if he hits someone else due being overloaded.

 

yeah, my brother has a bigass dodge, I think I'll give him a call, no reason to push it, or pull it for that matter. hehe I did just learn from the twoing bible, that my tow package has a pigtail ready for the brake controller, sweet!

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

You may want to pay for delivery. If the trailer weighs 2000-3000 pounds (which it probably does) you legally need a CDL to move it. These fines are bad (1000s). This becomes very dangerous for you and everyone on the road when you haul beyond the limits of the vehicle to try to save $500.

I'm sure you have insurance, most people carry between 50-300k... you can cause more damage than that with a 10,000 pound trailer pushing you out of control.

You should probably just pay for delivery.

 

Yeah...but I'm working on trying to give up that whole "You are a moron because it's illegal so you shouldn't do it" thing. People just get bent outta shape when they get told they are wrong. You are right- it is illegal and it's probably a bad idea. It would probably work out ok. And he's on the hook for so many things should an accident occur.

Like I said- I'm not ever gunna try it. I'll borrow my buddies Ram2500 Diesel or pay to get it dropped.

 

My Body has a 16000 lbs (8 tons), 36 feet, Cruise Boat. Believe it or not, he pulled that Big Cow out of the Water with his 2005 Tacoma. Before the taco 05, he had a 92 Taco 6cyl 1/4 tons & did the Same Thing & Bring the boat at his home, about 10 miles away from the Marina, with a Medium Hill on the Way...
It's f**king Funny. People Came at the Boat Ramp & Laught about this t'il they see the Taco do an anseome Job...

Even if you could tow that, Id never tow it without a proper electric brake. Surge brakes assume that the initial braking weight will be initiated by the tow vehicle, then picked up by the surge brake for the rest of the weight. Surge brakes are designed for light loads or trucks with big brakes (ie.not the tacoma). I know this because I have Landscape construction company and have some pieces of heavy equipment of my own ( a tracked skid steer and some larger chain trenchers). I tow them with my one ton only. You are always safer to have more truck then less for weight like that. Depending on state/provincial laws that kind of weight overload could fetch you a hefty ticket with the DOT.

 

I'd worry about damaging the transmission. If I were you I would not attempt. Pay the extra few bucks & have them deliver it.

 

That was just for a short distance. No biggie. But I would never do that for a long distance. It would cause serious damage to the transmission or other components.

 

not with my Taco!!! I'll stay @ 6,500!!! and if you drive up hill over the limit your trany will feel it,and going down hill your breaks will get a little hot!! but if you do it go slow and drive with over drive off or in 3rd gear!! good luck !!

 

It's all fun and games until you drive through a school bus, or run over a family because they didn't look and you don't have the breaks or the control to react as you should. The best part is trying to explain to the police the family walked in front of you and it had nothing to do with your completely out of spec illegal vehicle.

Enjoy your manslaughter / heavy fines / end of life as you know it if the slightest problem occurs.
