If they don't come with the new pads use the old ones.

This was an item I had my dealership look at last week. Standard response of "it's completely normal".

I explained that I have owned a dozen vehicles of all makes and never, ever owned on that made this noise. When I asked how this normal sound is happening on our Ford they said "well, it's a normal Toyota noise".

I'm not mechanic by any stretch...how could be just a Toyota noise, yet it's a noise coming from a brake system that I have to assume is common across all manufactures?

There is a TSB that basically says to put this special toyota grease on the pad edges and calipers. I just got the grease but havent put it on yet, can update everyone afterwards if interested

Please do! I know it's "not the end of the world" but when I go to brake and it sounds like 2 metal bars slapping together, I feel like I'm driving a beater. Not a truck I bought new 2 yrs ago.

I did a second pad spring on both front calipers. Only slap i have now is from forward to reverse the first time.

There has to be some slop so the pads can move in and out, pad slap will never fully go away.

Race calipers do not have anti-rattle clips because it inhibits proper piston retraction to some degree. The only force acting on the pistons causing them to retract when you disengage the pedal is the wound up tension from the piston seals. So the anti-rattle clips will cause a little bit of brake drag, it's all a trade off. The rattle won't hurt anything, in fact, it lets you know your pistons are retracting:). The oem front calipers are actually not a bad unit(Tacoma is opposed piston), most oem vehicles come with a floating caliper which is not nearly as effective, but much less susceptible to knock back due to bearing wear/runout.

So you are saying essentially: yes, there's annoying noise....but it's not a big deal because it's actually a better design than silent braking systems?

It actually worked for me. The stuff is very different from normal brake grease. It's much thicker.

My pad slap started at 15,000 miles. Toyota service blows. Have 37,000 miles on truck so 22,000 on front pads now with no slap or if there is its not echoing off buildings anymore that I can hear lol. They get a lot dustier than stock but let me tell you they stop a lot better.

Is there a recording of this noise anywhere on the forum? I also have something i am trying to troubleshoot. Had a few mechanics look at it, not especially in depth, though enough that they suggested it seemed to be more of a nuisance noise than a 'dangerous' one. Still, i really want to figure it out to be sure.
