I'd buy one. I can pick up in SoCal or Phoenix. If anyone else in Phoenix wants one I can bring 4 back with me.

yes he can to make sure he gets the product from China but as far as us paying him. I know no option to protect my money for that long of a time frame. I have been in several group buys from China and I just had to trust the leader of the group buy

I'm sure, and when my contact signs on here we can see what we will do. I wanted a cap of 20 from TW, but if we can get more and if the contact is willing to handle that logistic then lets keep it going. I would assume, based on the trend, that around 30 we would all be paying ~mid/high 400's.

In the mean time I am getting people who are interested so if anyone on the count list backs out, we can add those interested to get this thing going.

Hey everyone! My name is Francis and I'm the one putting together this Group Purchase. Quick background, I do not own a business, this is just something I stumbled upon. Like you I couldn't see myself paying $2k for a RTT when I'd probably only use it several times a year (not an overland yet, just like camping with the family). I found a supplier via Alibaba with really low prices. They were rated very high on Alibaba so me and 5 other friend took a chance and purchased 5 tents through the Alibaba purchasing channel. They arrived two weeks ago and we were all surprised by the quality. One of the friends had to pull out so I posted his tent on Craigslist, i8MUD, FJ forum, and Expedition Portal. It sold quickly but there was so much interest in the tent that I decided maybe there was enough people to make another order... may 5 to 10 tents this time. I didn't expect this to grow this much.

    Thanks for registering man.
As you can see we're way beyond 30. You have some people from the MUD forums too. What do you want to do?

The process of buy from China via Alibaba is crazy a lot of middle man fees and customs fees. It was a good experience ordering the first 5 at least I know what to expect.

The first question right now is "what is price for 20+ tents". I have this question out to my contact at the manufacturer. It probably won't be answered until late tonight because of timezones. Once we have this price we will have a better idea of the final price per tent.

I think there is also a lot of hesitation regarding giving a stranger what is now roughly ~10k. What can we do to give these people transparency and peace of mind?

Yes, I agree its tough to trust someone over the Internet with your money. The only thing I can offer is being as transparent as I can possibly be with all the costs, information, details, and the process.

Pictures: Here are pictures of my tent. It is actually an XL tent that sleeps 5. Similar to the CVT Mt Rainier Extended Vestibule. It is around 2 feet wider than the one I sold which was a 2-3 person (140cm wide). Let me know if you want the wider one, I can order that too. I haven't mounted my tent yet because I'm waiting on crossbars to come in from Amazon, so I opened up the tent on a folding table. Keep in mind the sides of the tent aren't tied down so it looks at bit loose. Here are the pictures. https://frangalvez.smugmug.com/RTT-pics

Cost: Here is a grid of the cost break down. I initially required 5 tents to make the order because it brings down the cost to under $750. The good news is for each tent after 5 the "Per Tent Cost" for numbers 3-8 gets smaller, which makes things cheaper. The tent cost (num 1) stays that same, unless we order 10 or more, then the cost per tent drops by $50. Number 2 and 9 stay the same [IMG]. Below are two scenarios a) 5 tents ordered = your cost is $733 and b) 10 tents ordered = your cost is $614! If we order somewhere between 5 and 10 tents the cost will be somewhere in between $614 and $733. Let me know if you have any questions on this grid. **Note, these are all actual costs based on my previous order of 5 tents. I am not inflating the costs to make money, my only asking fee is $50 a tent (number 9). SEE ATTACHED IMAGE for Grid

Payment: Payment is broken out into 3 phases. When we make the order, half the amount of the tent (number 1) and shipping (number 2) is required - this is Phase 1. When the tents are completed and ready to ship, the other half of the tent and shipping is required - this is Phase 2. Then, when the tents reach port and ready for customs to release the rest is due, this is Phase 3. I take PayPal, Venmo, Square, and bank deposit.

Timeline: The whole process will take around 2.5 months. It will take around 1.5 months to make (all tents are made to order). Then around 3 weeks to ship by sea and around 1 week to ship to reach Oakland by rail.

Communication: Because we are a large group, it is extremely important to reply to questions and make payments on time. We cannot move forward if one of us is lagging behind. On my end, I know it is extremely hard to trust some strange with your money, but I will try to be as transparent as I can be and answer question you may have. I will give you personal email and phone and address, so you can contact me at anytime.

Thanks again, let me know if you have any questions

    Francis
