My truck gives a readout of how many miles I can travel before empty. I'm not sure if this feature is new or common, but it's the first vehicle I've had that does it.
I have a suspicion that the distance has a buffer much like the above mentioned 3-gallon reserve, but I've never tested it. I was told it's not good to run a vehicle until completely out of gas.
Has anyone tested this for accuracy?

Yep that's about right, whenever I fill around DTE 0 its about 18 gallons.

Did I commit a forum faux pas here? I'm still relatively new. If so, my apologies.

    Nice...$2.50/gallon. I'm paying $3.00~$3.30/gallon here

I didn't read it anywhere. I never really let my tank get very low so I was just guessing.

I did a lot of testing a few years ago... The amount of gallons at the various gauge points is variable, and I should add +/- 0.5 gallons as temperature and just where you stop adding fuel to top the tank can matter. Sad if you live in Oregon where they don't allow citizens to put gas in their own cars!

Readings are straight from the ECU, using a scangauge II.

Also has repeated within .1G accuracy over at least 10 tanks now.

My figures come from real-world testing. I would stop at any station that was within blocks of where my gas needle hit those lines and fill up. Over the years, I keep observing. I usually get gas when it is on the 1/4 line or when the light comes on... and it is always filled with 13 to 13.5 or 17 to 17.5 gallons added (depending which point).

I'm nearing 100 fills in my 3rd gen, and I do the same thing ... which is why my link contains no measurement for the E line (no real world data for that).

Our manual states 3.2G remains when the light illuminates, and it comes on for me at 3.1G every time.

If we have the same tank, something is surely different within the system.

I think folks were wondering if your truck came with an owners manual.

Stuff like that is included in there. Along with lots of other useful data.

The E LINE is not empty. Empty is empty. Th E LINE is not where the needle stops dropping. There is a peg, well below, at least on the second Gens. Nobody should drive past E, but there are (for me) 3 gallons still in there. The light comes on before the E Line is reached, and I generally have 4 gallons remaining at that point.

I never claimed the E line to be empty(I approximate it at 1.7G remaining, but never filled to confirm from there. Others I have, several times). The light comes on for me above the E line.

See the last picture in this album.
