What Happens to the Tire Pressure Monitor When I Swap Wheels??

I know on my previous vehicles the TPM didn't work w/aftermarket wheels and the warning light just stayed on constantly with no way to turn it off.

Same on the Taco???

If you don't swap the sensors into the new rims or use one of the trick methods (PVC pipe, tactor tire. black tape mod. LED crush mod) then yes...It will be stay on.

It really depends upon what type of rims you get. Some rims will accept the old TPMS sensors some won't. It's all about where the valve stem hole is located on the rim. Sensors are very easy to swap, they are generally a 12 mm nut or 1/2 nut depending. You just need to test fit it and see. If you are having someone else do the tire install like at Discount Tire (I'm not sure if they are national or just AZ) or someplace like that, they should be skilled in doing this type of thing. I have personally done this on many vehicles. I work at a dealer (Kia), but I work in the used car reconditioning department, we do this kind of thing all the time. But beware, aftermarket rims are more prone to breaking the sensors, especially on low profile type tires. Otherwise there is no way to turn off the TPMS system, you will just have to deal with the annoying amber light. You can thank Ford & Firestone for the TPMS systems on all new vehicles. You can also look up TPMS strap kits. Lets you strap any sensor to any wheel (in a given size range)

 

At least it doesn't beep every 50m like my Ford....The indicator light I can deal with if the swap won't work.

 

When I got a set of moto metals and new Revos, I actually purchased a set of sensors, and Discount Tire installed them for me. They had to program the sensors to work with the truck (or the other way around, I'm not sure), but they work fine.

 

Do you remember what those sensors and installation cost?

 

I took mine to a local tire shop to have my tires mounted on my new wheels and they didn't have any problems swapping them over.

You bleeped out the wrong part. LMFAO!!! I seriously laughed when I saw that. +1

 

If I remember right, the sensors were like $80 each. No extra charge to install them cause I had Discount Tire mounting and installing the wheels and tires at the same time. I know, that's pretty expensive for an extra set of sensors, seeing as I already had a perfectly good set in my stock tires. But I want to swap out the sets between seasons, and I wanted sensors for each set.

Plus, Discount Tire beat the lowest price I could find on the Moto Metals, and the Revos, so the out the door cost, including the new sensors, was pretty comparable to trying to find everything online and do it myself.

 

my sensers for my snow set cost $85 each, proper fit to the wheels. Free install based on new tires on to 2nd set of wheels. Free rotation where i bought the tires too. They have a big hose clamp to keep the sensor in the tire too if you want to use old sensors.

so far here are the choices by cost sorta:
tape the light/business card.
put em in a whell barrow tire n store near the spare.
sensor companies sell a hose clamp device to put in after mkt wheels.
4 new sensors orderd to fit the wheels.

 

Apparently, you have to do something to get the truck to recognize the new sensors...I think I'm going to try and use the current sensors.

I Imagine this will fuc^% up the warrenty on the sensors if I screw up the install.

I had to "match" the new TPMS sensors and my truck. By putting in aftermarket sensors, you can't just reset the light, and then they work. I kind of equate it to "pairing a bluetooth device". Not all tire shops have the equipment to pair the devices. I found out, not even all Discount Tire shops have the equipment, hence my wait until their roaming tech made it to that store that day.

Look at these. No strap ons. These sensors are designed to be programmed to the vehicle instead of programming the vehicle to see the new sensor. This would allow "Mirrored" sets of tires that the vehicle would be happy with.

Interesting idea. I could not find a fitments list right out of the gate but I have an inquiry in on the technology.

 

Another $320 on top of tires/wheels....? Is this TPMS even worth it?

 

I know TPS have been ridiculed but I actually like them.

Depends on what you mean by worth it.
If you don't get something done- You'll have an idiot light on the dash all the time.
I thought it was kinda silly until I drove over a sheetrock knife blade on the highway. I was doing 70mph and wouldn't have had to stop for hours to get gas...at which point I probably could have blown the tire out bad. BUT the light came on and I stopped at the next gas station- Swapped it right out.

 

They said they had a roaming tech? Interesting. Were you there when this tech arrived? Was he in a company vehicle or uniform?

The reason that I ask is that there are independent guys that are going around local areas and handling these technological issues for shops. They are not employees of the shop but more like an independent business that offer specialty services. Many go under the name "Mobile Diagnostic Tech". They tend to be highly trained techs that have invested in tooling and equipment above and beyond what most shops have. That can even include dealerships in the used car department. I wonder if that was the service they used. There are even some of these people that specialize in specific services. Modern locksmiths, airbag system specialists and electronic module repair services are just some of the list.
