    hey guys and gals !
I have another dilemma on my hands
i have been hearing a front hub bearing going bad on my 1998 Tacoma 4x4 . i took it in to have both of them replaced because they have the same mileage and no use to do one and in a few months have the other one go out . my truck has manual lockout hubs, i'm not sure if this was factory of aftermarket . turns out the shop can't figure out what the previous owner did to it. i would really like to put it back to factory parts. the problem i'm having is i can't seem to find an exploded view that has part numbers so i can order the correct parts. i did get new bearings, hubs and seals but there are a parts behind the bearing that i can't get part numbers for. behind the bearing is a "NON ABS SPACER" , AND A WITHOUT FREE WHEEL HUB, "BEARING SPACER" I enclosed a pic to see if anyone could help me out. I just bought this truck and want my baby back ! if you can help out let me know , thanks ! 2011-02-23_224858_pic (2)a.gif

mine dose have a conversion on it but to take it apart isn't an easy task after they been on for a few yearts, my problem is that one of the hubs got damaged and I don't know if the factory stuff is going to match up with what ever kit is on my truck. I figured when I went to the Toyota dealer for the parts im looking for I would bring the damaged hub and see if there the same. still I think I would rather have the stock stuff put on. i'm not an off road gut , my truck is real clean for a 1998 . thanks for the info i'll check it out . this site is cool, at least the guys are social, I use To have a hummer and belonged to a few forums , the guys were real idiots. again, thanks for the info !

well ladies and gents, I did extensive digging last night for my quest to find the correct parts for my little truck. digging through diagrams, checking and double checking part numbers, contacting companies etc. I FINALLY FOUND THE ANSWERS ! As you all know sometimes things just don't fall in place but I did find the correct information to repair my little Toyota. I found diagrams from one site, part numbers from a dealership in Ohio, and got the number to a local Toyota dealer near my town. this morning I called and (thank you Lou) , we went to work on ordering the right stuff . Lou asked me for my "VIN" because I really wanted to find out if my truck had came with manual locking hubs or if this was an aftermarket kit. turns out my little Tacoma came with manual locking hubs!
finally some true answers! but after finding out that (1) new hub cost $ 276 bucks , and you should change out the locking nut that hold it all together which was another $ 174 bucks , well I decided to go with the automatic hub assemblies instead. since I already purchased the kit off ebay for $119 bucks which consisted of (2) of each, hubs, bearings, inner and outer grease seals, and snap rings. with the savings I made I decided to replace the upper and lower ball joints, and both cv axles which will make my front end almost rebuilt.
anyway I just wanted to share this info with you guys and gals, all info is valuable to someone , somewhere. if you need any help with finding this info I have it all on file and would be happy to share ! Oh, one more thing, the parts guy" Lou" said that he se quite a bit of the manual hubs due to the fact that the end of the hub is threaded and In the attempt to press the hub from the bearing sometimes the threads get damaged., sounds likely.

You know the trucks with auto hubs have different front differentials right, with a.d.d.? This disconnects one axle from constantly spinning when in 2wd. If you use the manual hub diff without the manual hubs your axles are constantly going to be engaged and your gonna get binding around corners and such on the pavement like if you were driving around with your hubs locked in.

The lock not can be reused if it's in good shape and what kind of damage does the "hub" have that you feel it needs replaced?

I recently done one of the wheel bearings on my manual hubbed taco and it required no more parts than the bearing and seals and the stupid special socket to get that locknut off.

didn't know that , I read there was a electronic unlock mechanism but didn't fully understand the function. well this changes everything now, I best get back in the phone and change my parts order . THANKS for pointing this out to me , I guess I would have been in a bad situation if I changed it over. ! when they pressed the hub out they damaged the thread area, real bad to the point there would be no way to thread the nut back on , I guess I could just do one side at a time and save up to do the other side. always something !

Ya, you can get away with swapping to manual hubs on an a.d.d. front diff cuz you just end up with two disconnects on one side which is no biggy, but I wouldn't risk goin the other way and having the front end constantly engaged.

Who messed up the threads? Previous owner or shop doing the work? If the shop screwed something up I'd see what I could do to get them to cover their screw up.

You could also possibly find a local machine shop and see if they can repair the threads.

the truck has manual lock outs hubs on it now, the bearings were needing to be replaced and I thought I could go to auto hubs but I guess that won't work because of the bind when cornering. plus it don't have the "ADD" system because it was manual lock out from the factory. i'm not a 4 wheel drive guy, I been building custom cars and hotrods all my life so this is a new adventure to me . I just ordered new manual hubs and new lock nuts, just going to put it back the way it was . by the time I get this done i'll have almost a grand in the front end repair! hot dogs and beans this month ! LOL ! :(

I know the feeling, my 97 I picked up for $1100 thinking I was getting a steal. Over the last few years I've probably put $4-5000 into it trying to get and keep it on the road. Basically had to rebuild all the suspension and drivetrain.

yep, it never fails ! I had a 1982 chevy s10 that I sunk $14K into (not hard to do) I traded this Tacoma and $2500 cash , I see that i'm not going to get to save any of that cash at all ! LOL ! if I could afford a new truck I would buy it in a heartbeat ,being a retired auto technician I can hardly stand work on anything anymore ! the s10 was to be my "last" hotrod build and I was going to keep it till I died but I live out in the country and a truck 4 inches off the ground and 450hp don't cut it in the snow. this Tacoma is a clean nice little truck and once I get the front end straightened out it will be good for out here. here's a pic of my trade.

I bet that was a fun little truck. I have a nice '05 duramax that used to be my only truck, but I Got sick of beating it and myself up taking it hunting so I picked up my tacoma to take some abuse off the big girl. I hear ya on the getting sick of wrenching on things, this tacoma has about burned me out in that aspect. I don't mind wrenching here and there when it's for fun like doing mods and such but constantly doing repairs gets old. I can't really blame my taco either though concidering it has 300k on the clock and came from being a farm truck. I just hope now that everything's like new I can get a good stretch with no problems. It's definitely an awesome little truck for in the hills.
