Toyota says, on the later 3.4's, you should change them at 90k miles.

I've read where some have gone as far as 140k+ miles before changing them. I wouldn't trust a belt that far.

I bought a 2.7 4 cy. just so I wouldn't have a belt to change. Usually a chain will have to be changed at 150-200k miles.

I drive alot of highway miles and don't drive it hard so maybe I should have gotten a 3.4 and let it go to 140k miles.

    Waiting on your opinions.

    Great site.

On my 96.....I had the dealer change the timing belt when I bought it (as part of the sales agreement). At that time, the recommended interval was 60K miles and the truck had 60K miles on it when I bought it.

At 85K miles - I changed the water pump. It was leaking.

If you haven't changed the timing belt or water pump yet...chances are, the water pump will start leaking LONG before 140K miles and maybe even leak before 90K miles (like mine did). While you're in there doing a water pump change, you should change the timing belt also.

The timing belt on my 98 was never changed untill the water pump went out around 225K miles probably back in 2005 or 06. It was changed again around 310K when one of the idler bearings for the timing belt started squeeling.
