clutch issue

ive done some searching but havent seen my answer.. i have a 2005 manual tranny and its lightly grinding from 4th to 5th gear only.. anyone know the reason and how to fix? a few ppl tell me new clutch but just wanna get you guys opinions..

 

You probably need to change your tranny fluid. I recommend redline MT-90.

Its definitely not a worn clutch.

 

Yeah..If the person who is telling you to get a new clutch- If they are a friend- Do not invite them to Christmas dinner any more. If it's a business- do not go back there.

It could be a syncro going or a damaged gear...but I think SteveO is right....Change the trans fluid with some good synth and see what happens.

Im not sure how much the second gen takes though. My first gen 5 speed takes a little under 3 quarts.

I've rebuilt several manual transmissions, but not one from a Tacoma; what do you want to know? Obviously the trans needs to come out, disassemble, and the main shaft assy needs to be completely disassembled; typically a hyd press is required and some special tools like bearing puller plates and some very HD snap ring pliers (not like what you're used to). Any local 4WD or trans shop should be able to do it for you as the insides of a manual transmission are basically the same as far as what a person would need to know to do it- you shouldn't need to go to the dealer but might want to provide a service manual if they don't have one. If you can pull the trans you will probably save half the total labor.

 

MT 90 made my tranny worse. I think i got a trans with a little looser gears...so when i put a thinner/syn gear oil in...it made the shifting worse....the stock dealer gear oil seems to work the best

 

MT-90 is not thinner than any other 90 weight oil, it just holds its viscosity to lower temps and lubricates better. It did help my tranny so I don't know.

 

5 gear has a lil glitch before it goes into that gear. brought it to a tranny shop and the guy said its deffinately a sycronizer.. they gotta send em off to get them rebuilt. i just go around that gear for now..

 

How often does this fluid need to be changed? Where is the drain hole, and refill hole, and is there a filter? I have never messed with manual transmission fluids. Only autos. Thanks guys.
