I think I was 11 or 12 when The Phantom was in theaters, so I was right in their target audience range, lol.

Rewatched it a couple of years ago and I immediately understood why my parents hated it after 10 viewings or so.
    Definitely a forgettable movie.

I'm looking at getting a Colt 1911 so I stumbled on this thread. What models do you guys have? How do they compare to others? I'd like to stay under $900, the series 70 seems like the best new option. I'm pretty new to handguns in general so try to overlook my ignorance.

Don't wrap your head around it needing to be a colt for a 1911. Find one you like in the price range you like. You're safe with any of the big names.

I've looked at a couple other manufactures but haven't found anything that really stood out to me. If you have some suggestions I'd be willing to look into them, though. I just like the original I guess, but not opposed to others.

Nothing wrong with colts either. Was just saying (since you mentioned advise welcome) not to discount the other major brands. Especially Springfield Armory.

Series 70s are the guns to go with if you're set on getting a Colt.
Look at used guns as well, you should be able to find a real nice gun at that price used. Do your research, know what look for and how to safety test a 1911, know how to field strip it and put it back together.

Here's a link to a PDF of Jerry Kuhnhausen's manual.

Check out the Remington GI model or a Springfield. Stay away from Kimber, Para ordinance, and anything from a company you've never heard of, and of course Taurus.

Both of those manufacturers make a good low price gun. As a rule 1911s for less than 1000$ are iffy, and most in that price range are trash.

Anyone know of a manufacture that still makes a long slide .45? I like the Dan Wesson Bruin but was hoping to keep the starting price point under $2k. Came across one from Metro Arms but not sure about a 1911 coming out of the Philippines.

Nothing wrong with kimbers except they are usually over priced. I've worked on a few Remington's and their specs are all over the place. Just FYI. Every brand has their quirks. There are plenty of good guns to be had for $850-1000. If your price range is high like say 2k you could also pick up a inexpensive used gun and send it off to a quality 1911 smith to have a it turned into a custom for that range and be way ahead of a manufactured gun in the same price range.

In order to do my deluxe magwell blend I first have to tighten up the magwell fit to the frame. Which usually means moving the hole in the magwell so the MSH pin pulls the magwell tight against the frame.

I start by making plugs on the lathe and then silver soldering them in place on the MSH.
    IMG_6331.jpg

Then install the MSH and clamp it to the frame so I can drill and ream out the proper size hole in the proper location.

Nothing wrong with a Kimber, if you can get 400$ off the price :)

I've had good luck with the Remington GI guns, but you're right, they are all a bit different. But IME all within spec.

So far every one I've dealt with has been out spec and poorly machined. The end users won't notice. Much like a RIA they run fine but are all over the place and not in spec. I build custom 1911s for a living. I've seen ramps to short (common to most modern guns) which can't be fixed because the bed is to short (not common to modern guns), grip safety cutout off center etc.

If you don't plan on doing custom work then the Remington's and RIAs are fine. If you do then I recommend other brands.

    Interesting.

Just out of curiosity, when were your samples produced? I only looked at a couple very early production guns, from the first year or so they were out.

Don't really know, the Remington's haven't been around very long though. Customers bring me 1911s. Say I want this this and this done and it gets done. One is a frame up build that was just finished. It was a mess.

Hmm, guess I'll take the off the recommended list then.

Remington seems to be able to fuck up just about anything that's not an 870 or a 700. And they've tried on their too....

Sounds good, thanks for the suggestions. It looks like there is a lot of knowledge here albeit a forum for trucks. I looked at the local shop the other day without much success, but i'll look around online for used ones nearby. Can't go much over $900 though, I'm also getting a G19 a lot of agencies are using them now and I'm starting BLET in a few months.
