alright so i have a 2012 auto 4.0 with about 93xxx miles right now i just did all new diff, tcase and engine oil to amsoil full synthetic and thinking of doing tranny fluid.

from what i understand, def use toyota WS fluid.
but with my mileage should i just do a drain and fill or take it for full flush.

i doubt its ever been done.
input from people who have done either or would be awesome..

i don't really tow but i do haul often in the bed and tow occasionally

    thanks guys

Flushes are expensive and not often that necessary. I would personally do a ATF change with full Syn, then do it again in 5000 miles (engine oil change) to do another change, getting it closer to 100% new synthetic.

13 TRD off-road, did the flush at 78k. Do a pan drop, clean the magnets, then do the exchange as described in the thread I linked.

Did the same job on my wife's GX at 105k, same transmission. No issues.

The filter is a mesh screen there's no point in replacing it.

If it's shifting normally at the moment, go ahead & do the fluid change.

All cases I've physically seen/read of fail, are transmissions on their way out already, shoddy shift points & multiple signs something is not right before the fluid change (as a hail mary) leads to its ultimate demise.

Take a look around for the comprehensive ATF article written here by @gearcruncher & see if you really want to replace your ATF with more WS fluid, it doesn't hold up well to extensive heat at all.

Drain. Drop the pan; clean it and the magnets. Clean/replace ATF filter. Fill & complete flushing with Valvoline ATF Dex/Merc Mercon LV. It's compatible with WS and Type IV, among other types; I have it in all my Toyota products (including the Lexus). $18 a gallon at Walmart; 3 will be enough.

Repeat in 60K for severe service; or 90K for normal driving.

If you take the time, you will see this is the predominant recommendation in all the Toyota/Lexus forums for vehicles and trucks with WS ATF. Amsoil is better but not worth the higher cost for most driving, imo.

It was too late for those units anyway.

Fresh fluid never ruined a transmission.

so i want to use amsoil, since its WS compatible i shouldn't have a problem and i should just do a drain fill with about 3 qts, and every 30000 miles after. with drain/fill and nt flush i should still drop pan and clean magnets and replace mesh?

I would do a full flush, and that's my plan with my truck.

Just make sure to read the Amsoil bottle to make sure it says "Toyota WS compatible". I'm not sure how many formulations they make.

I used one of those paint buckets from Sherwin Williams that lists the ounces and quarts on the side. Both of my trucks with the A750 transmission hold 3.25qts, or 104oz. I did four drain and fills a week apart, the first one the fluid came out looking brownish red, and by the fourth one it was a nice bright red. A drain/fill only takes about 30 minutes, and after you do the first one you certainly get faster at it.

You can drop the pan if you want, but I didn't. Our transmissions don't have a reusable gasket like many others, so you have to use rtv sealer. I didn't worry with it since I don't have any leaks.

I used Toyota WS fluid and unhooked the cooler lines to pump most of the old fluid out about 3 qts at a time. Went through 12 quarts or so doing that.

I'm thinking of doing that. Drain fill. Then again I'm a week 3 qts at a time till it looks new, how's tranny shift now?

If the trans shifts better after a fluid change, you waited too long. Maybe not excessively worn, but certainly dirtier than it should have been.

Valvoline full syn is WS compatible. No need for boutique fluids like Amsoil, OTC will do just fine.

The pan uses a rubber gasket, not RTV. Part number 35168-60010. You should also replace the crush washers on the drain and overflow plugs any time you remove them. Part number 35178-30010.

The Amsoil fuel efficient ATF is WS compatible
